This is where the academy meets the water.

Picture a campus where students aren't stuck behind four walls all day. They're steps from the river, building leadership skills in a space made for it. That's the vision behind the DowUrk Academy Riverside Retreat, one piece of the bigger DowUrk Opportunity Campus we're dreaming up in Tangipahoa Parish.

This is a conceptual illustration of a proposed project. The campus is still in site evaluation and feasibility planning. Nothing here is approved or funded yet. Dreams need funding to become real, and right now we're raising to fund the planning phase itself.

OHUB just teamed up with CompTIA to train 1 million Americans in real AI skills by 2030. And they're not starting in Silicon Valley. They're starting with HBCUs, community colleges, workforce boards, and Divine Nine organizations.

That's the part that matters to me. Everybody's scared of AI taking jobs, but the bigger risk is our community getting handed the tool with no training on how to use it. Access without skill is just access. It doesn't pay anybody's bills.

Our young folks are not scared of building. They are scared of not having the tools, the capital, and the mentors to make it real. DowUrk is in the business of closing that gap, one program at a time.

That's the vision behind the Gather by the River concept, part of the DowUrk Opportunity Campus. A retreat space built right on the water, for the kind of conversations that don't happen in a regular meeting room.

Real talk. For years we've been told buying a house is the fix for the Black wealth gap. A new Roosevelt Institute brief out this month says it's not that simple.

Black households held a median wealth of $44,900 in 2022. White households held $285,000. Homeownership sits at 41% for Black Americans versus 72% for white Americans. And when we do buy, the house doesn't always pay us back the same. One study found Black homeowners built about 48% as much wealth per year of ownership as white homeowners, roughly $27,700 over 23 years compared to $113,270.

Steering into lower value neighborhoods. Unequal appraisals. Harder mortgage terms with the same credit and income. The system was never built to reward us evenly for playing by the rules.

This is why DowUrk stays focused on ownership AND building our own infrastructure, not just hoping the existing system finally plays fair.

Learning sticks when people actually live it, not just sit through a workshop and go home.

That's the idea behind the Residential Lodge concept on the DowUrk Opportunity Campus, on-site housing for immersive leadership, workforce, and entrepreneurship programs. Picture a cohort staying together for a week, grinding on real skills and building real relationships, instead of scattering after a two hour session.

LA just cut thousands of school jobs to close a $231 million budget hole. In that same vote, the board still chose to keep the Black Student Achievement Plan funded.

That's not an accident. Equity programs are usually the first thing on the chopping block when money gets tight. The only reason this one survived is because people showed up and made noise about it.

What are you building that's supposed to outlive you?

McKissack asked that question back in 1905. Their answer was a construction firm. 121 years later, they've completed over 6,000 projects and pulled in $118 million in revenue in 2026 alone.

Forbes just put out its first ever ForbesBLK 25 list, 25 Black-owned companies employing more than 16,000 people combined. And nationally, Black-owned employer businesses just crossed 200,000 for the first time ever, up 62% since 2017, generating $249 billion and supporting 1.8 million jobs.

That's not a lucky generation. That's a system getting built on purpose.
