More experiments from Pot Club. 😂

These little plates are intentionally rustic — very much in the category of let’s try this and see what happens. Horses, mules and rabbits seemed like a good combination after we had a bunny show up in the pasture the other day.

Rabbits aren’t especially common up here, and the mules were VERY interested in this mysterious tiny creature. First there was nervous staring and a little jumping around, followed by cautious investigation… and eventually everyone decided the bunny was apparently harmless and could go about its business.

Which was especially funny considering Cooper’s head is probably ten times the size of the entire rabbit.

So: giant suspicious equines, one completely unbothered bunny, and a few more pottery experiments. I’m having a lot of fun figuring out what I like — and what I want to try next.

Another experiment from Pot Club!
This one was especially fun because it combines a couple of my favorite ways of making art. I took a lino block I’d carved for an earlier print and pressed it directly into the clay to create the horse design in the center. I used another plate as a mold for the shape, then added the texture around the edges.
Basically: printmaking, only with clay instead of paper.
I’m really liking how the glaze settled into all those carved lines and textures. There are so many things I still want to try with pottery, and right now I’m mostly enjoying seeing what happens when I bring techniques from the rest of my artwork into clay.
Another experiment from our Friday night Pot Club—and this one turned out pretty darn fun.
It’s now down here at Nest & Niche in Hamilton if anyone wants to give it a new home. 😊

More little experiments from pot club.

These are made from the same wonderfully rough red clay I used for the Redbird Crossing bowls, but this time I just played around with a few different ways of combining clay, animals and some of the other materials I love.

One has a tiny bird perched on the edge, and the others have little turquoise and copper horse buttons attached through the clay with leather. They’re deliberately pretty rustic — rough red earth, a little turquoise, leather, and an animal tucked in somewhere.

I think I’m drawn to these materials for the same reason animals keep showing up in almost everything I make. They feel connected to the things I actually care about and spend my time around — dirt, horses, wildlife and being outside. Nothing terribly profound or woo-woo 😂 — just little reminders of the things that make a place and a life feel like home.

They’re small trinket bowls for jewelry, keys, treasures, or whatever little things need a place to land. I think they’d also make really fun little gifts.

I made several of these, and they are all at Nest & Niche.

Sometimes the drawings that make me smile the most never make it past the sketchbook.

This little bear was just a quick, playful drawing that refused to stay hidden, so I made a small run of prints.
