A look ahead at what’s taking shape at Waimea Valley.

As we mark 20 years of preservation and perpetuity, we’re beginning several improvement projects throughout the Valley to help care for this special place and enhance the visitor experience.

From the Hawaiian Hale in Puʻukua to upcoming improvements at the Visitor Center, these projects will create new spaces for cultural and educational programming while helping us share more of Waimea Valley’s history and legacy.

Waimea Valley will remain open throughout construction, and we’ll continue to share updates as work progresses.

A look back at Kalo & ʻAwa Festivals from years past, honoring the ʻāina, ʻike, and traditions that continue to shape Waimea Valley.

Kalo and ʻawa hold deep places within Hawaiian culture. Kalo represents life, nourishment, and our connection to the land, while ʻawa carries traditions of ceremony, healing, reflection, and community.

Through this festival, we honor ancestral knowledge and the enduring practice of mālama ʻāina, while continuing the legacy of these plants and the people who have cared for them.

Join us for this year’s Kalo & ʻAwa Festival on Saturday, September 12, from 8:00 AM–3:00 PM at Palm Meadow, Waimea Valley.

Today, we remember Queen Liliʻuokalani, a beloved aliʻi and prolific composer whose mele were inspired by the world around her.

Even something as simple as water moving across a lawn could become inspiration for a song.

Her ability to slow down, notice, and find meaning in the ʻāina is a reminder for us to do the same. When we take the time to look closer, listen, and learn, we may discover stories and meaning in places we thought we already knew.

In 1987, Dolly Parton brought her ABC variety series Dolly to Hawaiʻi. The episode, “My Hawaiʻi,” featured many of Hawaiʻi’s beloved entertainers and musicians before concluding here in Waimea Valley, where Dolly joined the Honolulu Boys Choir in a moving performance of “How Great Thou Art.”

We are grateful to have these photographs preserving a moment in time when Dolly’s voice became part of the story of this wahi pana, a cherished and storied place.

Rest in aloha, Dolly. May your voice, your generosity, and the joy you shared continue to resonate for generations to come.

For our August 29 Summer Concert at Waimea Valley, we are honored to welcome Hālau i Ka Lima Kuhi Lani, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Kalimakuhilani Southard and Christopher "TC" Southard.

Through mele and hula, the hālau carries forward the ʻike and traditions entrusted from one generation to the next. Their performance beautifully reflects the living cultural practices that continue to thrive across Hawaiʻi.

Presented within Waimea Valley, a sacred wahi pana dedicated to the stewardship of Hawaiʻi's cultural and natural heritage, this performance is a celebration of aloha ʻāina, ʻike, and community.

Due to weather concerns, our August Moon Walk has been canceled. Mahalo for your understanding as we honor the ʻāina and prioritize the safety of our guests, staff, and the wahi pana we are fortunate to care for.
