Elk Creek Sauna

Elk Creek Sauna Elk Creek Sauna is a traditional wood fired sauna in the Catskill mountains. The sauna is available for retreats and hosts workshops.

Elk Creek Sauna hosts workshops covering the visual arts (photography, painting, drawing and sculpture), culinary arts, construction (including cordwood construction and green roofs) and gardening.

We strive to preserve the natural habitat on which the sauna is located.

Numerous species of wildflowers, plants and trees are some of the flora located on the property in addition to some ferns and moss.

Animals and other creatures include fireflies, which are currently in their mating season and light up the grounds at night to attract mates (a spectacular show from the sauna at night). Many other mammals, insects, birds and other species inhabit or visit the grounds.

We fired up the sauna after the photography workshop with with Zoe and enjoyed the sauna late into the night.

Thanks to an early start, the pour is complete in the early afternoon. This photo is taken shortly after the pour of the floor. The white object in the center of the floor is the drain -- important when water is used in the sauna to increase the humidity of the hot air.

The Capriotti team completed the pour of the sauna floor yesterday. Under the supervision of expert mason Pete Capriotti, sons Manuel, Anthony and Sam, together with nephew, Joe, laid insulation under the floor, placed a layer of crushed rock over it, then a layer of metal reinforcement for the concrete pour that follows. In this photograph, Manny checks concrete consistency while Tony and Joe mix mortar, sand and rock.
