Eye Zen Presents creates live public events that protect and promote LGBTQ+ histories through rigorous research, immersive art experiences and live performance. Founded in 2007, Eye Zen Presents (EZP) is a transdisciplinary theater company committed to unearthing and elevating Queer Trans Black Indigenous People Of Color (QTBIPOC) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA) histories to better understand the diverse lineages within our community. We create innovative, community-building performances and workshops throughout SF that illuminate the under-recognized legacies of our queer ancestors who have been silenced and hidden due to social and political oppression. EZP serves audiences through live theater informed by rigorous research into rich QTBIPOC and LGBTQIA histories available in archives, neighborhoods, community members, artwork and institutional memories.

Happy Birthday Gavin Arthur! Incredible openly bisexual activist, and astrologer who was foundational element in the “Human Be-In” in San Francisco.

This is a fantastic East Bay org who has supported Eye Zen’s work and many artists we know of in community and many we never heard of until they received the DEAR residency. DEAR offers these wonderful residencies at their beautiful, well equipped West Oakland studio space and support artists making new work with generous support and much care.  We created one of our best works in residence there in 2016 called Rainbow Logic, Arm in Arm with Remy Charlip. I’m a huge fan of Paul Dresher’s brilliant art and music and DEAR is one of the ways  gives generously to the community. They arena of the very few if not the only performing artists supported residencies currently offered in the Bay Area. They support but early, mid-career and established artists. I highly recommend applying and going to the info session so you can check out the space.

Today we are celebrating the poet Allen Ginsberg, and his impact and presence in the Haight-Ashbury.

Ginsberg was openly gay and a prominent LGBTQ+ poet and activist. His work contributed to the rise of the hippie movement, championing peace, love, and psychedelics.

Q***r History Happened Here: The Haight-Ashbury Switchboard

While not specifically gay, the Switchboard served as important infrastructure for the Haight-Ashbury, and a beacon for mutual aid in a time when so many people were traveling to the Haight looking for a place to belong. The Switchboard was operated by volunteers 24/7 and was an important source for anyone needing help: whether that be looking for a place to sleep, or needing support with a bad trip.

It moved to several places in the Haight, but we are highlighting its residency at 1797 Haight St, which is now the location of the restaurant

Have you heard of the switchboard before? Share stories below! Pass this on to folks who might have known about it.

If this moves you—if you see yourself or someone you love in this story—will you share this video?

Walk With Me is my love letter to Steve, to the elders who trusted me with their memories, and to everyone who’s ever wondered: Where do I come from? Who fought for me to be here?

It’s a self-guided audio walking tour through the Haight-Ashbury—a GPS-powered experience where you’ll hear 20+ q***r elders share stories of revolution, chosen family, and survival in their own words, right where it all happened. My story with Steve is woven throughout, but this is their legacy too.

I made a short film (just under 5 minutes) to tell you why finishing this project matters so much. It weaves together photos of me and Steve from the ‘90s and the story of how his loss led me here—to this work, to these elders, to you.

Send it to a friend. Share it in your group chats. That’s how we build momentum.

We’re still $36,000 short of what we need to finish Walk With Me by the end of the year. I’ll be honest: I’m scared we won’t make it. But I’m not giving up.
