Every other year, practitioners from across the United States gather at Hsi Lai Temple for the Short-Term Monastic Retreat.

Through mindfulness practice, Dharma study, and the discipline of monastic life, participants take a step away from the ordinary to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and a deeper connection with the Buddha’s teachings.

Hsi Lai Temple was honored to join the Hacienda Heights 4th of July Parade as our community celebrated the 250th anniversary of America. 🇺🇸

Together with our neighbors, we shared the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism by spreading positivity, joy, and kindness throughout the streets. It was a beautiful reminder to live by the practice of “Do good deeds, say good words, and think good thoughts.”

After the parade, we continued the celebration at the park with our community booths, connecting with friends, sharing meaningful conversations, and enjoying the festivities together.

Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated with us. May we continue to build a compassionate and harmonious community through kindness and togetherness. 🙏

At the Interfaith National Day of Prayer held at Temple Beth David, faith leaders and community members gathered under the theme, “Peace Begins With You.” The gathering brought together songs, music, prayers, and chants from seven different faith communities, creating a meaningful space for reflection, unity, and mutual understanding.

Hsi Lai Temple was honored to attend in support of interfaith harmony and community connection — helping bridge gaps between people of different races, cultures, and religions through compassion, dialogue, and respect. In the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism, events like these remind us that peace begins within each of us and grows through coming together as one community. 🙏✨

At a food distribution in El Monte, sponsored by Hilda Solis, our volunteers came together to support families facing difficult times.

Moments like these remind us that many in our community are navigating real challenges. Through Humanistic Buddhism, giving is more than charity. It is a way of responding to suffering with compassion, showing up for one another, and helping restore a sense of care and dignity.

By giving back, we not only support others, we also cultivate kindness and connection within ourselves.

Venerable Hui Ze Shih and members from Hsi Lai Temple joined Reverend Shumyo Kojima of Zenshuji Soto Mission at the Japan Foundation for a hands-on exploration of the Heart Sutra.

Bringing together Japanese Soto Zen and Taiwanese Linji Chan traditions, this workshop introduced participants to the practice of sutra recitation through both perspectives. From rhythm and tone to intention and meaning, each approach offered a unique way of engaging with the same profound text.

Chanted through the voice of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, the Heart Sutra points beyond fixed ideas and invites a direct understanding of the Dharma. Its simplicity in form continues to resonate across cultures and traditions.

Through shared practice, participants experienced how different expressions can come together in a spirit of mutual respect, learning, and connection.

VEGRUN 2026 at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area was a meaningful day centered on movement, mindfulness, and community. Through meditation, yoga, and a group bike ride around the park, we came together to practice Humanistic Buddhism in a very grounded and accessible way.
The experience reflected the idea of cultivating a healthy way of living, where caring for our body and mind is not separate from caring for the world around us. Each moment of stillness, each stretch, and each pedal forward became a reminder that practice can be lived through everyday actions, not only in formal settings.
It was a day of reconnecting with ourselves, with nature, and with one another, reinforcing the value of balance, awareness, and compassion as part of daily life.

At this year’s Earth Day celebration in Diamond Bar, volunteers from Hsi Lai Temple joined the community in sharing simple acts of care for our planet.

From giving away succulents and seed packets, to engaging children in hands-on activities, the day was filled with moments that reminded us how small actions can grow into meaningful change. We also invited attendees to make a pledge toward a more compassionate lifestyle, including choosing vegetarian living as a way to care for both health and the environment.

In the spirit of Earth Day, Humanistic Buddhism reminds us that caring for the environment is caring for ourselves because wellbeing, nature, and compassion are all deeply connected.

May we continue to nurture the world with mindful choices, one seed, one action, one moment at a time.
