Towards the end of 2000 the KCAT station manager in Hacienda Heights had been let go and the Board of Directors hired the Station Manager from WCCTV in Whittier, Tim Keeler. Now we had an advocate and Tim would talk the KCAT board of directors into lifting the ban on our show.
Tim was a great station manager. He believed in allowing total freedom to each of the show producers… within reason. No nudity and keep the cursing to a minimum. Plus, he genuinely enjoyed his job.
During the 17 months we were gone the previous station manager hired a rogues gallery of staff members who had come & gone and weren’t the best qualified to care for the place. Major pieces of equipment in the control room had been damaged, broken, lost or misplaced. Large set pieces and furniture had been thrown out and most of the lights in the studio didn’t work. The place was a mess. None of this discouraged us, we we’re ready to bring the show home.
While the new station staff repaired and replaced equipment, we contacted our dedicated crew and pulled together the old Marty’s Corner set as best we could. The styrofoam floating window frames had seen better days but the band side of the set was even more difficult. The faux brick walls we and every other producer used were gone. For some reason previous staff had thrown them away. So instead, we used a louvered back drop that was from a different show. The station was not even close to firing on all cylinders yet, but that would come in time.
Over the years we had several house bands, “The Corner Band,” “The Corner Combo,” “Sixx Gunn,” & “Second Wind.” The days of the house band was now gone. We always asked the musical guests to use the house band’s drum kit and usually it was fine. But some of the larger more complicated bands that we really wanted to bring in didn’t want to use a different drum set, so they either said no, or there was a fast and not always easy drum set switch during the 3min commercial break. So we eliminated the house band and used canned music going in and out of breaks, with our goal being to eventually pull in better musical acts.
The station’s edit system was down and at the time Frank was the only one on our crew who had a non-linear edit system, so he created a new intro with a synthesized Marty’s Corner theme song. (Trivia time; the original name to the Marty’s Corner Theme Song is called “Around The Town” which was a song that Marty and Frank’s old band had written years before the show started)
From 2001 to October 2002 the show would go through an identity crisis of sorts and It would take nearly two years of changes to the set, the crew & the cast to really start to find what this new version of Marty’s Corner would be like. Essentially we were starting over.
