Trainer Ellie looks over McCoy to make sure he’s healthy!

Routine lookovers like this help our sea lions grow comfortable with being examined for future veterinary checkups. This is called “desensitization” and is very important in keeping our animals healthy and calm during vet exams. These behaviors that we do with our animals are voluntary, and trainers spend a lot of time bonding and building trust with them to keep them healthy.

Raphael is here to show off some cool features of the American Alligator!

Those little dark freckles along their snouts are dome pressure receptors. These are extremely sensitive and can help alligators locate and catch prey by feeling changes in their environment, like water movement. The next feature is in their eyes- they have an additional eyelid called a nictitating membrane! This one is translucent, protecting their eyes while they are underwater. Lastly, only an alligator’s top teeth are visible when its mouth is closed (even when their tiny, like Raphael’s). This is different from a crocodile, where both top and bottom teeth are visible.

We at IMMS and Ocean Adventures are heartbroken to learn the loss of the beloved Dolly Parton. From her music to her charity work and everything in between, Dolly was well loved by so many people. We offer our sincerest condolences to her friends and family, and we share the heartache from her passing.

To celebrate her life, we have decided to name one of the wild dolphins of the Mississippi Sound after her. ID #3624, otherwise known as “Dolly,” has been sporadically sighted since 2016. As rare as they may be, each encounter with her is special.

We hope this token of appreciation for Dolly and her work will help continue the legacy she left behind.

This program is designed to provide exceptional research and learning experiences in a real-world setting to early career scientists in the fields of marine biology and ecology, marine mammal population ecology and behavior, veterinary sciences and conservation. Learn to cultivate skills that will serve you through your career, and form connections with the IMMS team. Have you met our baby American Alligators yet?

These four cuties are Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo! Curious about how we can tell them apart? Leo is the smallest, making him easy to identify in the group. Raph’s tail has a hook-shaped end to it. Mikey and Donnie have yellow stripes on their backs that look almost like ‘M’ and ‘D’ respectively.

IMMS President Dr. Moby Solangi, along with our Research Team and Stranding Coordinator, were proud to attend the Congressional Roundtable Meeting at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Hospitality Resort Management Center.

This public meeting brought multiple organizations and agencies together to address concerns and come up with win-win solutions to water resource issues. This includes the impacts of the Bonnet Carré Spillway, which caused an Unusual Mortality Event for our local bottlenose dolphins in 2019. The diversion of polluted river water by the Bonnet Carré Spillway has long-lasting consequences, and we hope this is a positive step towards preventing a catastrophe like 2019 from ever happening again.
