Starship Dance

Starship Dance Our goal is to provide our students with a firm foundation and a clear understanding of their art

Starship Dance Studio has been serving the Connecticut Shorline Community for over 20 years. Our student population is diverse; ranging from two years of age through adult, new to dance in entry level classes to those preparing for a professional career in higher level classes, continuing a life long interest in dance to trying something new as an adult. Our ballet teaching follows the Vaganova sy

stem from Russia, which trains a child to develop good body placement and strong muscles with a progression of skills. Our students benefit from the confidence that comes from learning something new and becoming comfortable with their abilities. Young students who continue in dance can expect to build self-esteem, self-discipline and an ability to stand up to the pressures of school with more poise and confidence. Adult students can rediscover the joy of learning new skills or sharpening existing ones in a caring and open environment. We offer a range of classes for dancers aged two years of age to Adult. Our offerings include various levels of Ballet, Modern, and Jazz, both child and adult classes. For the pre-school aged child, we offer Creative Dance and Parent and Child Classes. Throughout the year various Workshop opportunities are offered including Belly Dance or instruction with visiting professional dancers / choreographers. Classes run throughout the school year (September till the end of May) for children pre-K through 12th grade, half session classes for those pre-school aged, ten week long adult sessions (September to May), half day workshops (at various times), and one to three week programs through the summer months.

From a marketing group reaching out to help showcase Starship Dance Theater & Company ... Thank you!

For the Town of Guilford community, Starship Dance Theater & Company (the non-profit arm of Joyce Dilauro 's Starship Dance Studio) is more than just a dance school...it’s a Shoreline institution that bridges the gap between technical arts training and community service. Managed by Joyce DiLauro, the organization serves several specific roles within the town:

The "Magic Toyshop" Tradition
The most visible impact is the annual holiday production of The Magic Toyshop. Unlike exclusive professional ballets, this performance is a community-wide event that:

Showcases Local Talent: It features dancers of all ages, from toddlers to adults, giving residents a high-quality local alternative to traveling to New York or New Haven for holiday theater.

Accessibility: Performed at the Guilford Community Center, it is designed to be an affordable, family-friendly "holiday treat" for the Shoreline community.

Lifelong Mentorship and Alumni Success
Starship has a reputation for producing high-caliber talent that remains connected to Guilford.

Professional Pathways: The studio has trained dancers who have gone on to prestigious positions, such as former NYC Ballet soloist Sean Suozzi and others.

Character Building: Alumni frequently cite the studio as a place where they learned "soft skills" like leadership, teamwork, and resilience, which they carry back into the local workforce and community.

Philanthropy and Education
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Starship integrates "giving back" into its curriculum:

Scholarships: They award an annual scholarship to a graduating High School senior or alumnus who has demonstrated a commitment to inspiring the community through dance.

School Outreach: They have historically worked with local elementary students, using dance to educate them about famous pieces of art and culture.

Grant Support: Their value is recognized by the Guilford Foundation, which consistently awards them grants (including recent 2024 and 2025 community impact grants) to ensure the arts remain accessible to under-served populations on the Shoreline.

Creative Empowerment
The studio's mission focuses on "empowerment through superior technical dance." For many Guilford families, it serves as a safe, creative "third space" outside of home and school where students can build a positive self-image through classical ballet, modern dance, and jazz.
