From a marketing group reaching out to help showcase Starship Dance Theater & Company ... Thank you!
For the Town of Guilford community, Starship Dance Theater & Company (the non-profit arm of Joyce Dilauro 's Starship Dance Studio) is more than just a dance school...it’s a Shoreline institution that bridges the gap between technical arts training and community service. Managed by Joyce DiLauro, the organization serves several specific roles within the town:
The "Magic Toyshop" Tradition
The most visible impact is the annual holiday production of The Magic Toyshop. Unlike exclusive professional ballets, this performance is a community-wide event that:
Showcases Local Talent: It features dancers of all ages, from toddlers to adults, giving residents a high-quality local alternative to traveling to New York or New Haven for holiday theater.
Accessibility: Performed at the Guilford Community Center, it is designed to be an affordable, family-friendly "holiday treat" for the Shoreline community.
Lifelong Mentorship and Alumni Success
Starship has a reputation for producing high-caliber talent that remains connected to Guilford.
Professional Pathways: The studio has trained dancers who have gone on to prestigious positions, such as former NYC Ballet soloist Sean Suozzi and others.
Character Building: Alumni frequently cite the studio as a place where they learned "soft skills" like leadership, teamwork, and resilience, which they carry back into the local workforce and community.
Philanthropy and Education
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Starship integrates "giving back" into its curriculum:
Scholarships: They award an annual scholarship to a graduating High School senior or alumnus who has demonstrated a commitment to inspiring the community through dance.
School Outreach: They have historically worked with local elementary students, using dance to educate them about famous pieces of art and culture.
Grant Support: Their value is recognized by the Guilford Foundation, which consistently awards them grants (including recent 2024 and 2025 community impact grants) to ensure the arts remain accessible to under-served populations on the Shoreline.
Creative Empowerment
The studio's mission focuses on "empowerment through superior technical dance." For many Guilford families, it serves as a safe, creative "third space" outside of home and school where students can build a positive self-image through classical ballet, modern dance, and jazz.
