Never a day without a line, never forget where you came from.
This is one of my favorite portraits for so many reasons. It’s the study for the Bellelli portrait by Degas. Degas being a direct disciple of Ingres. It stresses the importance of an academic approach to art as well as observing what makes something alive. I sweat it out for years at from childhood to adulthood, day in and day out working from a model just as all of our predecessors. It’s that constant reverence for drawing couple with a gusto for life that serves as an endless source of inspiration.

“Untitled “, 52” x 40”, Oil on Linen

The question of “where does your inspiration come from?, is on that I am often presented with. Apart from just walking this earth, it comes from shared life experiences and very often music. It’s profound how someone can write and perform something so transcending that every note was written into your current state. As if it were a soundtrack to a scene in your life.

I asked my dear friend to sit for me one afternoon way back. I was at a precipice of devoting myself to art after getting fired from some job yet again… he showed up with his ES-335 and a coffee cup. I asked him, “man, how do you do it?” He sat down on my couch, looked me dead in the eyes and calmly said, “you just do it.”
