Dreaming Curiosity Orginal Works Presents: Slow And Steady Makes The Writer
The Spooks are haunting and the candy is flying off the shelves. With the spooky season comes a new crop of written scares to keep audiences up at night. Having written many a chilling tale in my time as an author, I’ve discovered that the urge to be an over night success can sometimes slow progress to a crawl. The best advice for preventing this came from one of my supervisors. The key to success is going from one to twenty and so on, rather than trying to go from one to one hundred right off the bat. In other words, It’s better to take your time and build as you go. It goes a little something like this.
Slow and steady helps shape ideas- When you get a good idea down and you’re adapting it into a story, the imagination sometimes gets ahead of the actual writing. When you take it slow, your ideas have time to take shape and better fit where you elaborate on them.
Little by little breaks the writer’s block- When you write a work of art gradually, you can think easier. In my time writing papers for college courses, I’ve found this to be essential in keeping your audience interested. When you’re rushed and trying to get your thoughts out at once, you forget things, get distracted, and often focus on just getting it finished. This leads to heavy stress and writer’s block. Take a deep breath and take a break when you start to feel the urge to blast through.
Remember why you’re writing- Often times, writing lengthy works can lead us to forget why we started writing in the first place. This usually happens because an idea is rushed. The key is to stop and think about what brought you to bring your idea to life on paper.
So, Keep these tips in mind as you’re elaborating on that writing idea as you tear open your favorite Halloween Candy. Sit back, relax, and let your creativity flow as free as a spook on Halloween night.
