Greenville Awarded a Grant for Boardwalk to Connect Wildwood Park and River Park North

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The City of Greenville has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to support the construction of a boardwalk that will connect Wildwood Park to River Park North. This funding is part of the Great Trails State Program, a $25 million statewide investment in trail development established by the North Carolina General Assembly.

The Greenville project will include the construction of approximately 685 linear feet of elevated timber boardwalk through a scenic wetland area. Once completed, the boardwalk will form a vital link between the City’s two largest parks—River Park North and Wildwood Park—connecting their extensive trail systems into a unified 16-mile network. River Park North currently features 5 miles of established trails, while Wildwood Park offers an additional 5 miles of trails and nearly 6 miles of dedicated mountain biking trails.

A highlight of the project is a planned river overlook, offering panoramic views of the Tar River from a cypress-lined wetland area. This boardwalk connection was identified as a key component in the Wildwood Park Master Plan and was ranked among the top five short-term priorities in the City’s 2023 Recreation and Parks Master Plan. Both plans were developed with significant community input and were formally adopted by the Greenville City Council.

Construction is expected to begin as early as 2026.

The Greenville Community Garden is now The Greenville Wildlife Garden! Same place, new mission: Creating a space for pollinators and critters to enjoy a natural space in the middle of an ever-changing city.

As more trees come down and are replaced by parking lots and apartment buildings, we see our mission as one that needs to change, too. We will still grow some food, but the main focus will be on the critters.

We hope you will join us in this new adventure! 🦋

If you'd like a break during the Farmville Dogwood Festival this weekend, stop by The Duck-Rabbit taproom for a beer. We're open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 3 - 8. On Friday we'll have live music perfromed by Marty Benson and by our own Gray Williams!

This is also the occasion for me to let everyone who has enjoyed a Duck-Rabbit beer know how privileged and grateful I feel for the 20+ years Duck-Rabbit has been a part of this community. It's hard for me to let you know that this will be Duck-Rabbit's last weekend. I know that this is the right decision, but I still can't help but know that I'll miss you and everything Duck-Rabbit. Thanks for your support and your friendship and for letting me do my thing here for so long!

Being our last weekend, we'll have some very good discounts on merch and beer to take home. See you at the bar!

Sincerely,

Paul Philippon
