"At the Campaign for Southern Equality, we are responding to the growing barriers that transgender people across the South are facing when trying to access gender-affirming care. Over the past few months, our team has worked to understand the scale and scope of disruptions to care for transgender adults, including provider closures and other changes that have interrupted people’s access to care. We captured our findings in a Community Advisory Memo and are committed to working alongside trans Southerners to create new resources and systems that help bridge access to the care people need and deserve.
This week, we are announcing the next phase of this response: the Trans in the South Access Project, a platform of resources designed to help trans adults in the South navigate an increasingly challenging landscape and access gender-affirming care. The project includes expanded offerings in our Trans in the South Guide, a directory to help trans people find affirming medical and service providers across the South; new resources on funding your transition and accessing care via telehealth; and ongoing tracking of disruptions to gender-affirming care for trans adults across the country.
We are also piloting one-on-one navigation services for trans adults in Tennessee and North Carolina, based on needs identified by community members in those states. Trans adults in Tennessee and North Carolina can connect directly with a Navigator to talk through provider options and other resources. []"
For trans youth and their families who are navigating gender-affirming care in states with bans, we also lead the Trans Youth Emergency Project (TYEP). TYEP is dedicated to breaking down barriers to care through patient navigation, emergency support, and financial assistance. The program provides $500 quarterly travel grants for families pushed out of care, as well as round-trip flights to help young people access the care they need. So far, we have distributed $1.2 million in travel grants, and the need continues to grow."
