Whether roles playing various identities should be reserved for actors who are of that identity has been a big debate in Hollywood of late.

Many thought the gay character Charlie in The Whale should have been played by a gay actor, but in the end it’s just a job, so does it really matter?

This documentary was the one that we tried doing a virtual movie night for in 2020 after the start of COVID. You can still watch it on Netflix at any time.

The couple's more than 70-year romance was featured in Ryan Murphy's 2020 documentary.

The film was scheduled to be our next movie night just before pandemic lockdown.
What identities do you think should be reserved to be played by someone of that identity? It can be a very complex question, often involving questions of whether actors of that identity are passed over for those roles because of their identity. What about trans actors playing non-trans roles, or LGB actors playing "straight"?
I'll add my own comment under my own name below.

"There must be a leveling," Redmayne said, "otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates."

Until we're able to gather for Movie Nights again, here is a great film to watch this Monday evening at 10pm on PBS NC (Suddenlink Cable 4, Broadcast 25.1) and re-airs at 4am.

Just wanted to note that when we return to in-person events, we'll probably be on a somewhat irregular schedule based on when I'm able to return to Greenville to host them.
For any who aren't aware, I (Rich Elkins the film series coordinator) moved to Raleigh in 2016 and have been returning most months to put on the event, but over time scheduling them around my other commitments has become increasingly difficult.
When we first started this event in 2011, there was a team of 3 of us who were coordinating, with me being the primary, but the other two (Ann Marie Alderman and Summer Wisdom) both moved away (much further away than I did).
I'd love to see us have a team of folks who can keep this running and with my continued participation, sometimes without being present, keep this event running on a predictable schedule, rather than limited by my availability. The primary coordinator will need to be someone affiliated with Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Greenville (NC) but other members of the team would only need to be from the community. I'd also love to see the team be composed of a diverse crowd (age, gender, race) to make sure that the films are more diverse and everyone can see themselves represented. (I've tried to do that, but it has been a struggle to find good candidate films at times to fill the gaps when they become evident).
So with our 10th anniversary I'd welcome anyone who is interested in being on this team to reach out to me directly or simply comment here so we can build a group to keep this event going for another 10 years or more, providing another continuing outlet for the LGBTQ+ and Allies community of Greenville and surrounding areas to see good q***r cinema.
Thanks for your patience, those of you who've made it through my long post. I hope to hear from several of you and get a strong team built!
