Somerville Manning Gallery specializes in fine art and sculpture of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Brandywine illustrators and artists of the Wyeth family Since 1981 the Somerville Manning Gallery has been committed to exhibiting art from the historic tradition of the Brandywine Valley, to presenting the best of regional artists, and to bringing to Wilmington artists of national and intern

ational stature. In these years we have introduced current art trends into an area already steeped in a rich art tradition, mounting exhibitions that center around our cultural heritage both past and present. With respect to the Illustration School begun by Howard Pyle in 1894, the gallery has arranged historic exhibitions such as "Howard Pyle and His Students" and "N.C. Continuing with the Wyeth family, Somerville Manning Gallery exhibits and sells paintings by other family members such as Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, John McCoy, Anne Wyeth McCoy, and Anna Brelsford McCoy. Somerville Manning Gallery specializes in fine art and sculpture of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Brandywine illustrators and artists of the Wyeth family. Recent exhibitions include American and European Masters, showcasing noted artists such as Milton Avery, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Maurice Prendergast. Somerville Manning Gallery also represents and exhibits fine contemporary painters and sculptors such as Peter Sculthorpe, J. Clayton Bright, Greg Mort, Bo Bartlett and many others.

Giovanni Casadei (b. 1956), The Creamer, Oil on panel, 10 1/2 x 12 inches, Framed: 14 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches

Giovanni Casadei was born and raised in Rome, Italy. From 1978 to 1980, he studied at Scuola Libera del N**o (Free School for Drawing and Painting sponsored by the Academy of Fine Art of Rome) under the instruction of the Armenian artist, Alfonso Avanessian. From 1980 to 1981, he was enrolled at the Academy of Fine Art in Rome, then from 1981 to 1983, studied further under Alfonso Avanessian. After studying in Rome, he moved to Philadelphia in 1983. In 1988 he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with Seymour Remenick. Casadei has taught painting at various art centers in the Philadelphia area since 1997.

Casadei’s approach to painting is to communicate to the viewer his love for life and human beings, through the expression of his feelings, emotions, and passions that are inspired by the visual world around him. He captures with the medium of painting a moment that exists in him and that is inspired by light, colors, and the visual abstractions that nature offers us in every moment in our life. He has shown and sold his work in Philadelphia and other major cities for the last twenty years.

Sarah McRae Morton (b. 1984), For Anu, posted with striped edges, on flax, in plaster and stone, with Love, 2024, Oil on linen, 33 x 33 inches

Sarah McRae Morton grew up in rural Lancaster County Pennsylvania, where she still keeps a hayloft studio above the horse stalls in her family’s barn. Sarah attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and has trained under artists Myron Barnstone in Coplay, Pennsylvania and Odd Nerdrum in Norway. She received fellowships to pursue art historical research in Europe and received a Matisse Foundation fellowship for her work on the local history of West Virginia. She also studied with the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property in partnership with the Vatican Museum Laboratory in Rome, Italy. McRae Morton has been an Artist in Residence at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME; the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT; Monson Arts Residency, Monson, ME; and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Amherst, VA. Her work is shown across the United States and in Germany.⁠

Morton’s paintings are invented portraits of her ancestors and historical figures – people from her own life, from books and paintings, and from her travels and stories learned. The events and people illustrated are not bound by time or fact but are imbued with ghosts and artifacts from cross sections of history. Sarah’s work is wildly romantic, with an earthy palate and energetic movement around the canvas that quiets on key moments – detailed renderings of the face of a bear, the lips of a lover, the fox stole around a poet’s neck. The paintings seem to flicker to life with her spirited brush strokes.

Julia Levitina (b. 1981), Euthyphro, Bronze on wood base, 17 x 13 x 8 inches, Edition 7/9

Julia Levitina was born and raised in Odessa, Ukraine, and currently splits her time between Philadelphia and France. She creates powerful and elegant figurative sculptures in bronze that aim to capture extraordinary in the ordinary. Levitina personally attends to her entire craft process, from clay to bronze, including metal casting and finishing, in her studio.

Levitina has held solo exhibitions of her bronze sculptures and drawings nationally at Brookgreen Gardens, Frederick Meijer Sculpture Gardens, Noyes Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and internationally at City Hall of Odessa, Ukraine, St Jean des Arts, La Maison Verte in France and Foundation Taylor in Paris. Levitina’s bronzes can be found in public and private collections in US and in Europe, including La Salle University Art Museum and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in PA, Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor, Flanders House in New York City, Jewish Museum in Budapest and Van Mieghem Museum and City Hall in Antwerp, among others.

Greg Mort (b. 1952), So Far Away, 2021, Watercolor on paper, 21 x 28 inches

Greg Mort is a widely recognized American contemporary artist whose unmistakably modern creations have the classic feel of the Dutch Masters juxtaposed with startlingly modern designs. His signature images combine his passions for art, science and nature. His work has been exhibited in over one hundred museum and gallery shows around the world. They are in prominent public and private collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Museum, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, the Boston Museum of Science, Delaware Art Museum, Farnsworth Museum, Academy Art Museum, Portland Museum of Art, and the Brandywine Museum of Art.

Throughout his career Mort has recognized the power of imagery and used his art to share his passion of promoting environmental awareness. In 2022 Mort was a featured artist in the Peabody Essex Museum’s “Climate Challenge: Inspiring Change” exhibition. That same year, the image of Greg Mort’s painting “One World” was selected for the United Nations and New York Climate Museum’s 2022 Earth Month exhibition in New York City at Rockefeller Center. He has been honored to participate in the United States Department of State’s Art in Embassies program. Mort strongly believes in the ideals of cultural diplomacy and recently had a painting at The White House as part of this program.

Deeply fascinated with astronomy and the universe Mort’s life-long interest in science is frequently reflected in his artwork. He has been�a commissioned NASA artist since 1983 and serves on the board of the Lowell Observatory. In 2010 his painting “ZERO-G Apples” was one of six paintings juried into “The First Art Show in Space@” aboard the International Space Station. A skilled astro-photographer and telescope builder, Mort is a sought after speaker on the intersection of art and science.

Timothy Barr (b. 1957), Another Time, 2024, Oil on panel, 30 x 27 inches

Timothy Barr finds great inspiration in the Landscape and serenity of rural America. His intimate paintings of stone walled farmhouses, centuries-old trees and domestic scenes embody the solitude and grandeur of pastoral life. While he is able to capture the beauty of the countryside, many of Barr’s compositions are the products of experience and imagination brought to life through study, patience and his sophisticated use of light.

“I’m interested in the contrast that light brings to a scene,” Barr has said. “It’s fleeting and needs to be slowed down with paint so we can love it always.” Barr’s paintings are imbued with the characteristics of Luminism, a late 19th century technique highlighting reflective waters, magnificent skies and heavenly spotlit pastures.

Francis DiFronzo (b. 1969), Zero Hour, 2020, Oil over watercolor and gouache on panel, 28 x 52 inches

Born in California in 1969, Francis received his B.F.A from California State University, Fullerton. He then came east to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he worked and learned under the guidance of artists Murray Dessner, Jan Baltzell, Sidney Goodman, Vincent Desiderio and Irving Petlin. DiFronzo earned his M.F.A from the Pennsylvania Academy in 1998. In 2004 DiFronzo was awarded the very selective Pew Fellowship, an honor granted to only four painters every four years, as well as the Stobbart Foundation Fellowship in the Arts Award in 1998 and the Liquitex Art in America University Award in 1993.

Francis DiFronzo portrays the natural world with a sense of romance and mystery. His layers of paint create elusive and brilliantly executed surfaces, which are perfectly showcased in his impeccable approach to the light of the sky, the leafy trees, and drifting boats that inhabit his paintings; and he creates these poetic landscapes purely from his imagination. His highly realistic scenes are both beautiful and poetic, but also deeply mysterious, and at times ominous and foreboding. DiFronzo’s unique imagery tells the story of dreams, aspirations, fulfilled and unfulfilled and the travels that take you to these destinations. Eschewing nostalgia and ornamentation, he transforms the ephemera of American landscapes into intense visions, revealing that the most unassuming territories are never as straightforward as they appear.

Steven Nederveen (b. 1971), The Silence in Between, 2025, Mixed media on photograph, 60 x 48 inches

Steven Nederveen’s artwork has long been grounded in his meditation practice and influenced by the calming effect of immersion in his favorite places. He creates compositions of oceanic coastlines, panoramic landscapes, and old growth forests using heightened colors and high-contrast golden light. Highlighting the grandeur of the natural world, Nederveen’s artwork is achieved through a process that combines photography, painting, printing, and erasure; the resulting pieces allow us to imagine a space between reality and dream.

Nederveen received a Bachelor of Design from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, and studied at Medicine Hat College, Medicine Hat, AB. He has shown his work across North America, as well as at art fairs around Europe. His work is part of collections including Armani Canada, Richmond, BC; and the Al-Fayed Family Collection, London, UK.
