RIP 🎨 David Hockney 1937-2026

So thankful we had the opportunity to see hundreds of Hockney’s masterpieces in person last year in Paris

April 9 to August 31, 2025

This exhibition was dedicated to David Hockney, featuring over 400 works from 1955 to 2025. It focused on his work from the past 25 years but also includes iconic early pieces like β€œA Bigger Splash” and β€œPortrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)”. The exhibition showcased a variety of media, including paintings, drawings, digital art (iPhone and iPad works), and immersive video installations. Hockney himself was closely involved in the exhibition’s design and curated the selection of works. It offered a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of his artistic style and his embrace of new technologies.

Total Class Hours: 5 hours

Description: Wet Felting is an ancient felt making technqiue to create a seamless piece of felt fabric or sculpture. Wool is durable, naturally anti-microbial, breathable, odour & stain-resistant. In this workshop, you will learn how to wet felt a 3D wool felt vessel by applying the resist felting method. All basic felting materials and supplies are included. No experience required. Please bring an old beach towel. Open to ages 14 to adults.

3D headdress inspired by the Cantonese Opera & echoing my first Wool Painting I created in South Carolina over a decade ago & exhibited at the inauguration opening exhibition at Greenville Center for Creative Arts in May 2015

β€œ The Flower Princess β€œ 帝ε₯³θŠ± is one of the famous Cantonese opera written by playwright Tong, Dik Sang in 1957. It was a tragic love story about Princess Cheungping ι•·εΉ³ε…¬δΈ» in the mid-17th century, around the time of the collapse of the Ming dynasty. The β€œvow” wedding scene was the last act. The couples chose to drink poisoned wine to show their loyalty to the fallen Ming dynasty.

β€œMy heart yearns for us to be buried together,
Like mandarin ducks, hugging and cuddling,
We’ll build a new wedding chamber in the world beyond; Down in the underworld we shall find a home for ourselves.”

Returning to a theme from my first wool painting β€œChinese Opera Actress” over a decade ago, I created this piece based on the traditional Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) phoenix crown worn by brides and noble women.

Titled β€œCantonese Opera: The Flower Princess,
β€œ the headdress was hand-crafted using 3D wet felting for the base and needle felting for the details with NZ Corriedale and Tencel fibers. The butterfly and flower motifs symbolize high social status and natural beauty. That was Princess Chengping, the daughter of the last emperor of the Ming dynasty - 帝ε₯³θŠ± - the direct Chinese-English translation.
