To understand how intertwined race, music, and the war on drugs have always been, you must go to the beginning.

This is a heartbreaking piece, about one of the most gifted vocalists of the modern era - a woman who desperately needed recovery, and who would not get it because of the color of her skin and her refusal to be silent.

We make different beats today. We hear different voices, use different technologies. But the humanity, and the battles, are sadly the same.

The war on drugs - the war on PEOPLE - must end, so that the lifestyle of recovery, in all its many forms, may begin!
