(www.abovetheboro.com) Lake Brandt on New Years Day, 2018. Be sure to checkout and their upcoming newsletter which features ... . “Shawna Tillery, Planning and Project Management Division Manager for The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department, says that Lake Brandt is the most visited lake in all of Greensboro, based on trail counters at eight different sites in the city. Originally built in 1925 and raised to its present level in 1958, it was named after Mayor Leon Brandt, who served in 1907 and 1908. . To give us something to dream about in the warmer months, GSO P&R reports that “Lake Brandt features fishing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), kayaking and canoeing (all available to rent). Fishing is most successful for largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, but other species are often caught.” To view the beautiful majesty of the serene waters at sunset is to know the peace of nature. Its beauty looks especially gorgeous from the A&Y (Atlantic & Yadkin) Greenway, which is Greensboro’s only Rail Trail. . . Something I found interesting while boning up on The A&Y Railway was that while its “lifespan covered 1899 to 1950, some of the rails were laid in the 19th century as part of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway (CF & YV). The CF & YV ran from the Atlantic port of Wilmington, NC to Mount Airy. This railway transported mostly granite and at one time took travelers to visit the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.” In the present day, it marks an awfully nicer scenic route to take if you’re not in a rush to deal with the terrible traffic down Battleground Avenue. I’m forever grateful to our town’s amazing parks and rec department, who make GSO such a beautiful place to live and have even won (thrice!) the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Administration.” http://ift.tt/2mtYyIh

(www.abovetheboro.com) Merry Christmas! Rest assured, we didn’t hit Santa on the way up tonight. is the definition of a winter wonderland. If you haven't driven through or walked the neighborhood it's hard to explain how overwhelming the spectacle is. . The tradition started with one family in 1996 and today has grown to over 3,000 , a food drive that has provided over a million meals and an official 5k event. Be sure to drive/walk through the neighborhood this year and bring some canned food with you for the cause.. .. . #336 http://ift.tt/2pqewqW

(www.abovetheboro.com) Happy Halloween! Who else is using their children as excuses to stock up on candy tonight?✋️ Check out the story behind this haunted hotel in downtown Greensboro... . It’d be pretty awkward to walk in on your boss embezzling cash. In fact, if your name is Phillip and you worked at the Biltmore Hotel at the turn of the century, it could be downright dangerous. Apparently, our friend Phillip saw a little too much one night and on his way home, some thugs knocked on his door and gave him a warning. The next day, when he came into work, instead of being greeted by a happy secretary with a warm mug of coffee, he was dragged across the floor, beaten and tossed out the window to meet his end. His office is now room 332 and Phillip has stuck around to haunt primarily female guests. Patrons often have sensations of being dragged across the room and apparently one evening, a guest in the room next door called to complain about someone loudly banging around. You guessed it- room 332 was vacant. . . Unlike Phillip, who never gets to leave his old office (worst fate ever?), Lydia, a “lady of the night”, has been seen throughout the hotel and out front, where she once drummed up business. One night, a client went a little too far and tossed our poor girl over the railing, leaving her to haunt the room below Phillip’s. Because it is believed that Lydia’s favorite color is pink, guests that stay in room 223 frequently leave pink “offerings”, like purses or lipstick, to appease Lydia into not haunting their stay. In fact, 223 is the only pink bedroom at the hotel, as the staff motto is to “be polite to the ghosts". . . Major props to for the write up! One of my favorite things about Greensboro is the ever-present honoring of the past. With the renovation of one of our town’s oldest mills, it’s easy to see why we should preserve and cherish the buildings that hold such historic significance. . . If you’ve ever been to Revolution Mills, you know how beautiful it is: gorgeous wood floors, sweeping, open spaces with natural light and exposed brick make this living and event space one of the most coveted spots to live and work in Greensboro, especially given its proximity to downtown GSO. . . Expanding over 45 acres, the $100 million development was originally built in the late 1890s by the Cone and Sterberger families to be a flannel production plant. 40 years later, it was the largest sole manufacturer in the world. By 1982, like many textile plants all over the country, it was forced to close down. . . Self-Help from Durham currently owns the space and has completely restored the beautiful building. Now, it’s been turned it into apartments, event spaces, offices and restaurants. To check out the history of the building and of other Cone Mills, stop in to see “The Fabric of Memory” or visit http://ift.tt/2l4bSEW to see UNCG’s digitization project. . . . . . #336 http://ift.tt/2xXcWRf

Check out the new mural downtown! is pctured here finishing up his mural titled "Thought Forms". The colorful geometric shapes surrounding the faces represent abstract ideas, thoughts and emotions. The north wall is more introspective, while the south wall is focused towards the future in a more anticipatory expression. .. .. To complete the project he used over 400 cans of professional grade spray paint from spanish Montana and it took about 10 days to complete. is looking good!.. .. 📷by: - thanks for the great shot.. .. .. 🔄Repost🔄 .. Today is National Dance Day! Let's dance!!! Greensboro’s National Dance Day schedule includes Latin, Jewish and Indian dance performances, as well as Line Dancing and Breakdancing. Thanks FaithAction International House, , Weaver Foundation, for this awesome event! .. The annual event was established by So You Think You Can Dance producer Nigel Lythgoe and the Dizzy Feet Foundation where dancers and non-dancers across the country are encouraged to get movin'. Dizzy Feet exists to fund dance education to underserved communities, and grants to educational institutions that work with talented individuals. But you don't have to be talented for NDD. This grassroots campaign encourages Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health, combat obesity and engage with dance in it’s many forms.. .. #336 http://ift.tt/2heYegb

For 71 years this barn has been at the heart of a rolling countryside farm in Summerfield, NC. This barn, built in 1946, was one of the selling points for current owner, David Couch, back in 1998. Prior to current ownership, the barn and surrounding farmland were once owned by J.C. Cowan, former CEO of Burlington Industries, who used the farm and its pond to host fishing outings for local Boy Scout troops. In the early years of Couch’s ownership, The Barn was used for storing hay and farm animals until an extensive renovation in 2013. .. .. A few renovations later, The Barn now boasts a rooftop terrace, adjoining tent for 300 people, upstairs loft, front porch and is fully equipped with a state-of-the-art screen projection and sound system. As one of two event venues on farmland, The Barn is an excellent space to host events for all of life’s special moments. .. #336 http://ift.tt/2v1xuG5
