If you’re new here, our eldest daughter was married this past summer, and we are currently in the beginning stages of planning our second daughter’s wedding (I hope you will follow along!). An unexpected result of the planning process, was a very organic art opportunity I hadn’t considered until we were neck deep in the details.
My encaustic work contains a category affectionately titled “The Scripted Collection”. These abstract pieces are created by carving words into the heated surface of pigmented wax. As an artist, these pieces were inspired by the chalkboard works of Cy Twombly, and through the years they have taken on a life and originality of their own. Many colors added, and words unique and different with each piece. What started as words from Scripture carved into the surface, has grown into songs, poems, names, etc. I mainly work these pieces as commissions now, with clients requesting what is special to them.
Last year our daughter’s phenomenal wedding photographer .hennes suggested we use one of these pieces as the backdrop for Ella’s wedding invitation flat lays. Brilliant! I carved Ella’s wedding verse into the surface, we used the encaustic piece for her flat lays, and in the end the art is owned by the bride and groom and becomes the first piece of original art to hang in their home.
In addition, we added an art package for wedding guest gifts, which offer another layer of personal touch. Though it was particularly tender for us as my daughter was the bride and I was the artist, this can be a keepsake for any bride.
We have linked the details for more information in the Amy Heywood Art bio.
