This artwork is a spontaneous mural, painted with no set plan in mind, by the members of the Black Women’s Art Collective - Jessica () Dee () Bevelyn () and Karen ()

We taped off a space on a movable wall at the , one person began to paint, and over a two-week period, we just took turns responding to each others’ marks, having a few conversations about next steps and how it was developing, and letting it become whatever it wanted to become.

Working in community, in this artful, liberated way, produced something none of us could have individually imagined. We all just took turns putting our hands in it!

You can visit The Collective’s “Seeing Ourselves” exhibit to see this mural in person, and view much more artwork and personal reflections from each of us.

We hope you are inspired to create!

“My work in the visual arts is, and always has been, a continuous search for understanding. It is an expression of purpose and reflects a personal interpretation of the universe. Each new creation presents a visual manifestation of the sum total of this life long investigation and serves as a reaffirmation of my commitment to the arts.” -Mildred Thompson, artist. 1936-2003.

The Black Women’s Art Collective invites you to Seeing Ourselves, an exhibition at the Center for Visual Artists . Seeing Ourselves was born out of a need to amplify, uplift, and support black women artists and creatives as cultural workers. Groups like the Collective are critical in the nurturing and tangible support of Black women artists in their craft, allowing us space to create while being truly seen as who we are and who we will grow to be. This is Seeing Ourselves.

An opening reception is planned for First Friday, June 3rd, 2022 from 6-9 pm. We invite all of you to share in this monumental exhibition through the month of June.

The Black Women’s Art Collective extends many thanks to both the North Carolina Arts Council and the Center for Visual Artists for their fiscal and tangible support of this project.

Don’t forget to share this with your networks!
