2023 Fall Semester WrappedšŸŽ¬ (pt.1)

1. Katie Animation
Digital, 2023
The assignment was to make a GIF of a person of my choice. I chose my best friend since first grade as I already had a ton of footage of her flipping (she does parkour). She has an affinity for graffiti/street art, so I compiled some pictures she’s taken over the years and made it into the background. I’m super happy with how it all came out!

2023 Fall Semester WrappedšŸŽ¬ (pt.2)

2. Reptile Room
Digital, 2023
My boyfriend and I have built this room in its entirety and lovingly care for each animal in it, so I wanted to pay homage to that. I love the result!

3. N**e Model
Charcoal, 2023
This was a 2 hour drawing in my life drawing class. I usually don’t work very quickly, so this was quite a challenge and I’m impressed with myself for how it turned out!

4. Frog Still Life
Digital, 2023
The assignment was to arrange 5 items and do a 2 value rendition of them. I have no specific attachment to this piece but I thought it was cool!

5-8. Photoshop Practice
These were exercises to familiarize myself with photoshop. They are meant to convey space, balance, and movement, respectively.

Overall it’s been a good semester and I’m happy with my progress!

And that’s a wrap on the 2022-23 school year :)
*all photo editing/retouching done by me*

1. Fin
Charcoal, watercolor and colored pencil, 2023
The assignment required an animal, a plant, a person, and an object in some kind of space. I chose an octopus, roses, the woman, and meteors in a gradient sky. I currently cannot explain this piece any further but I’ll change this caption if I figure out what it’s aboutšŸ˜‚

2. IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD
Charcoal, 2023
I was having a rough week between mental illness and hydrocephalus and the assignment was self portrait so this was expelled from my soul. I’m fine now, was just having a moment :)

3. Pop Art Sculpture
Wood and acrylic paint, 2023
We had to choose an art movement to represent through sculpture. I chose pop art, more specifically the classic ā€œPOP!ā€ bubble, and added discolored circles to imply the circle pattern seen throughout much of the comic-book-style art. *I know pop art is more than just comic books, I just focused on that style more heavily than say Andy Warhol or Keith Haring.*

4-5. Shunted Brain
Hydrocal from a silicone mold and acrylic paint, 2023
These were both hydrocal pours of a silicone mold I made. We were required to make 2 sculptures with different surface treatments, which is why there are two and they are painted differently. It’s an artistic rendition of a shunted brain, and honestly I don’t have a whole lot to say about it. If I can’t think of an idea for a project, I tend to default to something dealing with my hydrocephalus, so that’s what this is lol

6. Pumpkin Patch with Scarecrow
Charcoal, 2023
We were assigned to choose an artist to ā€œcontinue the conversationā€ they deal with in their art. If you know me, you already know I picked Vincent Van Gogh. The main piece of his I was inspired by in this case was Wheatfield with Crows. I believe his primary conversation was an attempt to cure his mental illness by feverishly capturing everything he found beautiful in the world, so if you know me even better you know I wanted to draw a bunch of pumpkins. I think I was able to continue his conversation in a more personal way, especially because he and I have a lot of the same illnesses.

Identity
Paper collage, 2022

This was the most painstakingly tedious project to get through, but I’m really pleased with the result! It’s made of pieces of patterns I collaged to make myself with my identity being, well, myself. Everything changes and I’m allowed to grow and change with it, but I’m always gonna be me. It’s also a nod to my brain surgery with my open head.

Some of my less notable creations from my first year at college so far :)

1. Cleaning my Brain
Charcoal on paper with colored pencil collage element, 2023
-The assignment was hierarchical scale, so I drew my brain in a puddle of cerebrospinal fluid, which dwarfs me, the figure trying to wipe it clean. It’s essentially about mental health and my brain disorder.

2. Chaos Altar
Recycled bike tires, inner tubes, and reflectors, 2023
-This was a group project as a part of an installation. I don’t have much to say about it, but I think it turned out cool in a really ugly sort of wayšŸ˜‚

3. Shoe still life
Charcoal on paper, 2023
-I drew this for my 2D class from a still life the teacher set up so there’s no meaning or anything but I’m really happy with the realism.

4. Zig-Zag Balloon
Garbage bag, 2023
-I made this as a part of a larger group inflatable in my 3D class. It was my first time using the ironing technique to make seams for a functional inflatable and I’m pretty proud of my success with it.

5. Nautical still life
Charcoal on paper, 2023
-Another assignment for my 2D class, again not super interesting to talk about but I’m pleased with it.

6. Chipboard Sculpture
Chipboard and hot glue, 2022
-My goal with this was to make the chipboard behave in as many unexpected ways as possible. That includes a bendable strip that I manipulated into a circle, a spiral through the middle, and twine made from very thin chip board strips. I’m not thrilled with the result but I had fun and learned a lot making it!

Tomatoes in a Theater Audience
Colored pencil

2/2 of my entries in the 2022 art show curated by Carolyn Faulkner

The tomatoes could be a nod to ā€œthrowing tomatoesā€ at whatever the pumpkin is talking about, or perhaps the ability of people to calmly hear someone out even if they’re not inclined to…or maybe they’re just tomatoes in an audiencešŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Pumpkin on Stage
Colored pencil

1/2 of my entries in the 2022 student art show put on by Carolyn Faulkner

The pumpkin could be representative of the seasonal nature of lots of social and political movements…or it can just be a pumpkin on a stage for fun lol

I don’t remember the name of the organization but I drew this portrait and sent it to her as a gift. I hope it made her smile :)

THE SNAKE PAINTING!!!!
Acrylic on wood
2021-2022

This was a huge 5’x4’ commission that I worked on with another artist (tagged). It took us a little over a year to complete and I could not be happier with it. Sure there’s a lot of improvement to be made in future projects but I’m really proud of how this one turned out!

6. Time Warp

This piece includes a misnumbered clock, breakfast at night, and an impossible calendar to depict my lack of time awareness, which is present for several reasons:
- in the hospital I never knew what time it was because I slept at all hours and never went outside
- anesthesia tends to have that effect and I had 6 doses in 2 months
- with all the brain damage I really just have no idea when it is ever
