Tips for viewing the Northern Lights tonight. 😎💫

AURORA TIPS: It's been awhile since we've had a decent northern lights display, so it's a good time to set the table of expectations. The current forecast suggests Strong (G3) conditions could be possible as early as Thursday night. Exact timing and impacts are always TDB.

Regardless, there are things you can do to maximize your experience. First and foremost, you're going to want to get away from any and all city lights. Dark skies are your friend and could make the difference between a great night and disappointment, regardless of what kind of show exists. And remember, be patient! The aurora will ebb and flow in time.

While there are certainly rare times when the northern lights are so intense they glow brightly to the naked eye, most don't work that way (especially in the U.S.). Many times, what your eye will see is vastly different than what a camera will pick up. Why? Because the camera lets in more light. The longer the exposure, the more light entering the camera & the brighter/more vivid the end result will be. I can't tell you how many times I've posted vibrant 30 second exposures when all I saw was a faint white haze with my eyes.

It's important to understand that reality. Too many times people see incredible photos and assume that's what they're going to see simply looking out a their window. That a recipe for disappointment. These events are to be enjoyed and appreciated, so we don't want disappointment! Set your expectations accordingly and hopefully we'll be in for a great show!
