WE AGREE! And we think this past weekend at WORMTOWN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2026 was a great example. We're so proud of the community we've become over all these years! Thank you ALL for being part of it!
Saxophonist Destiny Pivonka was setting up her gear before Sneezy’s set at Domefest when a fan struck up a conversation—leaning against the monitor, chatting away like they’d run into each other at a bar. Mid-sentence, the fan got excited, grabbed Pivonka’s setlist off the stage, and started to walk off with it. “Oh hey! I need that for the show!” She called after them.
A beat of sheepish silence, the setlist handed back, a shared laugh—and because Pivonka’s the kind of artist who remembers the moment fondly, that same fan got the setlist for real once the last note rang out.
No rail. No barricade. Just an artist close enough to talk before the show.
Moments like that are the whole reason Domefest—a small camping festival at ACE Adventure Resort in West Virginia’s New River Gorge area—sticks with people long after the weekend ends. Spending a few days there this August made a case I keep coming back to: intimate camping festivals, done right, are the sweet spot for the kind of connection and community that drive the live music experience.
What Fans Are Really Chasing
“There’s an intimacy between the community that naturally occurs when you attend a festival for multiple days,” Domefest attendee Kitty Tardani said. “You bond by commiserating and celebrating all of the things together. Whether it’s coming together after a storm to help your neighbors, or gathering at a campfire to jam. Festivals afford the opportunity to deepen bonds in a way single-day shows just don’t allow.”
In an age when anyone can watch a livestream from their couch, Tardani argued that fans who go out to see concerts in person are chasing more than just live music.
“We desire, crave, want, and—dare I say—need that deepened connection of community,” she added.
