Over these past 30 years, approximately 3500 students have participated. Children’s Theater was formed as a cooperative effort between the four school corporations of Hancock County - Greenfield-Central, Eastern Hancock, Southern Hancock, and Mt. These school corporations supported the Hancock County Children’s Theater by providing funds and resources. Beginning in 2003, the school corporations we
re no longer able to provide the funds and resources to support this program. Children’s Theater now raises a substantial portion of their own funding through donations and sponsorships. The purpose of the Children's Theater is to provide students who have creative abilities, the unique opportunity to develop and use those abilities in a theater setting. Students participate in either the performance area or the art area. Students who are accepted into the performance area are involved in the singing, dancing, and acting aspect of a show. Students in the art area are involved in the designing and building of sets and all the backstage work during the performance. Another purpose of this program is to provide students the opportunity to interact with other students throughout Hancock County. We have between approximately 125 students who apply each year for this program. Students who have completed grades 4-8 are eligible to apply for participation. In 2016, we had 120 students who were accepted to participate in the program. Hancock County Children’s Theater occurs during the month of June. The students meet three and one half hours each day and complete their work with two performances at the end of the month. The students are supervised by a paid staff. Our paid staff is supported by an amazing group of parent volunteers. These parents assist with duties such as serving snacks to the students each day, selling tickets and concessions, providing publicity, as well as organizing and making costumes, and putting make-up on all the actors. Our parent volunteer team consists of approximately 75 adults each summer.
