I also shared this on my business page for anyone who follows my work there.

People often get surprised when they hear that I very much prefer shooting film—especially for my own work—over shooting digital.

This article was recently shared inside the darkroom community I run, and it really struck a chord. Not surprisingly—everyone in there is deeply in love with shooting film and making prints in the darkroom, just like I am.

It got me thinking about where we’re at right now. In a world where AI can generate images instantly and endlessly, does a handcrafted piece of art feel more valuable? More real? More grounded? Does the fact that something was made slowly—by hand, through process and intention—change how we experience it?

Film photography and darkroom printing are inherently tactile. They ask for time, patience, and decision-making. And when an image finally becomes a finished print, it exists as something you can hold, live with, and return to—not just scroll past.

I’m genuinely curious what you think.
Do handcrafted, physical works carry more weight today because of how digital everything has become? Or does it not change how you see value in art?

This article puts words to many of those thoughts beautifully.

I’m honored to be featured in the newest issue of Focus/Zine from Spectrum Art Gallery.

Meg put together a really thoughtful issue, and I loved being part of a conversation that focused not just on images—but on process, intention, and community.

We talked about how I came to build an online darkroom community, why the print still matters, and how shared learning can change the way we grow as photographers.

Huge thanks to Meg and Spectrum Art Gallery for including me alongside so much inspiring work.

👉 You can read the full issue here:

And if you’re into physical copies, the details are at the bottom of the page.

Would love to hear what you think.

Are you a fan of Infrared film? Yes or no?

🖤 Here’s a print I worked on last week.

I’ve got a bit of a love/hate relationship with infrared film. It can give you really interesting — sometimes even amazing — results, but other times it’s just plain disappointing and nowhere near what you expect.

Late this summer I headed up to Door County to photograph a winding road that’s been shot countless times before.

Usually you see it in the fall with those brilliant colors, but I wanted to try something different. So I loaded up some Rollei infrared film. The results? Honestly, I do quite like how this one turned out.

What’s wild is it was really overcast all day, and I really didn’t think I was even gonna take a picture once I got to this road. Because everything was just blah and not very good conditions for infrared film at all. But as soon as we pulled up to this spot, there was one patch of blue sky right over the road in the direction I was shooting. Otherwise, it was all clouds which would’ve made for a less interesting picture. It was really pretty crazy, so I figured I better at least take the shot.

Have you ever shot black and white infrared film? If so, what’s been your experience with it?
