Tonight is my final winter recital before taking a sabbatical to focus on my family. I cannot even begin to describe how much joy I’ve had from teaching music lessons to so many incredible students. I will miss it so much (and expect to be back at it once I have a kiddo driving!). Please come out to Bethel tonight to see a free show with lots of very talented musicians! We start at 7P, and I will be in the front row just trying to KEEP IT TOGETHER 😭😭😭😭!

I know it’s popular to whisper up into head voice these days, and that’s just fine if it’s where your starting. But once you get up there and head voice has been introduced, become it’s best friend. Give it some volume, try to get rid of the breathy quality and go for for CLARITY. Think Anna Kendrick, Kristen Bell, Chenoweth.. you get the idea. 🎶

Super proud of all y’all who sang/played in recital tonight! I couldn’t promote it like normal because of Covid, but can I just say that all the techniques that you’ve developed over the semester were showcased beautifully! I wish the audience could see the blood sweat and tears you guys put in throughout the weeks of practice, because I see it and am continually amazed. I hear the notes you’re hitting that you couldn’t hit before, the runs that are cleaner, the break you used to have that’s gone now, the piano pieces you never thought you could play...it’s a tough time to be a performing arts kid, but don’t give up on your craft. Keep improving your gift and sharing that talent with us!

Singer: do NOT skip your vocal exercises, ESPECIALLY the hard ones. They are pinpointing the technique you need help with the most in a way that your songs aren’t.

Don’t try to sound like someone else when you sing. They’ve already sung the song- we want to hear YOU, not your vocal impression of someone else. There’s only one voice in the world just like yours, don’t waste it.
