The 2024 Rochester Acro Fest has been canceled due to low attendance numbers.

We are proud of the intention, work and passion we put into the festival. The combination of excellent teachers and incredible facility was a fantastic value proposition. There was a great turnout locally but things dropped off rapidly outside of that. Unfortunately, we didn’t get close enough to our break-even point to throw the event we wanted. We don’t consider this a failure, as so much was learned and earned in the process. We are going to take time to reflect and reassess for any future offerings. We are thankful that you all trusted and believed in our event to participate in it. We welcome you to join us again in possible future events.

Respectfully,

Rob Woods & Alyssa Antonelli

Volunteer Spotlight 🔎 Meet & !!!

We are happy to have the contributions of two folks who add so much to our community flavor. The athletic and artistic backgrounds they have bring a comprehensive mix of astute eye for safety, support and a light hearted vibe. Their faces will be the first you see and that’s a wonderful way to kick off the festival.

Lauren Johns is an east-coast based Artist. She graduated with honors from the University of the Arts with a BFA in Dance and a Minor in Religion and Philosophy. After school she toured along the east coast with Aura Curiatlas, and then Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, where she curated and produced work as well as created and performed- Not all at once… but sometimes, all at once. Time spent not upside down, literally, she managed the MAAS Building, a cultural hub in Philadelphia. There she founded the MAAS Winter Artist Residency and Co-Founded Cannonball Festival. Cannonball Festival and Miniball Festival are now in their 5th year and with over 500 performances each year, have already grown larger than the entire Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Lauren has 14 years of teaching experience in schools and workshops, here in the states and abroad.

Lauren has performed in works created by Wilmer Wilson, Jesse Zaritt, Daniel Clifton, Curt Haworth, Kim Bear-Bailey, Brian Sanders, Douglas Becker, Sidra Bell, and Katie Swords.

Lauren has performed and presented commissioned work at the Guggenheim, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Barnes Foundation, the Merriam Theatre, the Prince Theatre, and most importantly in Philadelphia’s beloved public parks and public spaces.

Friday Intensives are scheduled!!! 📅🎉

Doing a single style of activity all day long can be hard on the body. has an amazing model that splits the typical 6-hour long intensive into dual 3-hour long intensives which allows you to shift that load around your mental and physical capacities. It also allows you double the chances to connect more personally with the teachers you travel to learn from. For example, you can do 3 hours of h2h’s in the morning then do 3 hours of Icarian in the afternoon so your shoulders and knees don’t get burned out on the first day. We will add two more options once attendance hits a benchmark.

Hobs & Jenae will be teaching pitching (Standing) in the morning and Icarian (L-Basing) in the afternoon.

Joseph and Laura will be teaching h2h (Standing) in the morning and a blend of choreography & dance lifts in the afternoon.

Sean and Emily will be teaching handstand acrobatics (L-Basing/Standing) and whips (L-Basing) in the afternoon.

City spotlight: Learn more about the location - Rochester, NY!!!

Rochester is a hub city positioned between the East Coast and Midwest and below the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, making its position an easy day's drive from most major metro areas in the northeast. The city has always prided itself on the strong connection to the Canadian friends just across the lake which in some cases are literally familial. It’s always been a convenient meeting place for AcroYoga since events started being held here in 2015 and we are thrilled to continue that tradition!

There’s the famed wine region of the Finger Lakes that boasts endless farms, parks and waterfalls to experience not far from the city. The endless array of day trips into the hills and valleys are a short drive south can easily fill a weekend agenda. There is a vibrant farm-to-table scene and multiple farmers markets that supply fresh local food. Boating, sailing and swimming are also a big part of the maritime heritage and a great way to enjoy the warm summer days. Rochester has acquired many nicknames over the years including being known as "the Flour City" and "the Flower City" for its dual role in flour production and floriculture. The moderate cost of living and ease of life makes it a great starting point for adventures for residents and visitors alike. We want you all to come train AcroYoga but would also love to share the richness of the easy living in the city we like to call home.

If you find yourself with some down time during the festival, there’s plenty to do and see! There’s beautiful parks and historical landmarks for little to no cost, or museums and food options for paid options. If you want some more ideas, you can check out on Instagram!

Organizer spotlight: Meet and !!!

Rob is a lifelong resident of Rochester that started AcroYoga in 2015. He’s an analytical creator who is drawn toward activities that combine technique with culture. When he is not wrenching on his race car or pouring through historical technical documentation during research on great engineering minds, he is sharing movement in parks and studios. His journey to AcroYoga came by way of growing weary of typical gym weightlifting but then discovering the connection he desired through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, bouldering and yoga. Rob’s main focus is in L-Basing washing machines, popping and F2H in long elaborate sequences. His current focus is improving his repertoire of Icarian and standing skills. He looks forward to meeting you all through teaching, learning and co-creating with his blue collar work ethic combined with an exuberant caring nature.

Alyssa started in 2016 and moved to Rochester in 2022 with her husband, 3 dogs and 2 cats (her own personal circus!). She has a background in competitive gymnastics from childhood until about the age of 16, and found circus arts after moving from her hometown in PA to Phoenix AZ in 2016. She started co-teaching acro with during the crazy pandemic times in 2020 until her move back to the east coast in 2022. Alyssa dabbles in other circus disciplines such as hammock/sling, lyra, tumbling, and flying trapeze; but her first love is acro! She specializes in L-basing acro and loves a good popping flow. Her goals include becoming more consistent with H2H, exploring more banquine flying and learning to base more standing skills. Making beautiful lines is always top of mind for her and making weird intricate shapes with anyone willing to try is one of her past times! She loves to make her classes fun and especially loves teaching beginners to see the sense of accomplishment of learning something new and challenging on their faces at the end of class.

They quickly realized they shared similar approaches to training and temperament (half Sicilians) which led to teaching together since. Hard work and boisterous laughter are always around for these two.

Teacher spotlight 🔦🚨 Meet !!!

A social worker by trade, Lori has always been seeking ways to connect, build community, increase positive self-esteem, establish safe and healthy relationships, and have fun in life. Lori began practicing acro later in life, having no experience with yoga or gymnastics. She was blessed to have loving and accepting individuals who were patient and willing to teach her new skills, resulting in her having the time of her life, while being in the best physical shape of her life.

As a young adult, Daniel enjoyed music and computer coding, but was lacking in physical exercise and social connection. He began taking yoga and started to see and feel the benefits. He went to an acroyoga meet up with a friend and couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He knew he had to be a part of it, feared he wouldn’t have enough skill or coordination, but he continued to show up and try. He became physically stronger and more confident. Daniel loves problem solving, which helps when trying to figure out how to do the moves seen on Instagram, and his ear for music lends itself to creativity with movement.

A dedicated acro partnership grew out of their shared love of acro and commitment to the practice and was created. Regardless of what is going on in their lives, Daniel and Lori continue spend time meeting to focus on all things L-base. They love to flow, learn new machines, and create routines and original washing machines from moves they see fellow acro yogis performing. Acro is their “happy place."

Daniel and Lori are passionate about showing people that Acro yoga is accessible to everyone, with incredible physical and mental health benefits. They are often found at jams trying to entice curious onlookers into trying a beginner pose in order to spread the pure joy that they feel every time they are able to connect and play through acro. Daniel and Lori truly believe that everyone can acro.

Lori is a Certified Acro Love Teacher and Daniel is a certified AY Fit Instructor.

Teacher spotlight 🔦🚨 Meet & !!!

Juliana and Michael began training Acro together in 2018 in New York City. Since then they’ve been digging deep into calibrating hand to hand and dynamic acrobatics. They’re excited to bring you their favorite drills and progressions to unlock those “aha” moments to make your dream tricks feel cool and casual.

Juliana shows up with a playful heart and an eye for technique. She fell in love with Acro at first sight and has spent over a decade learning about creative collaboration through balance and movement. As a professional coach in the muggle world, Juliana has an eclectic background helping others set goals and understand themselves more fully. She spends her time in NYC coaching Acro, handstands, and flexibility. When she’s not doing Acro, Juliana can be found petting dogs and freediving for lobsters. She will do a handstand on anyone who asks.

Michael started his circus career in a college club where he put on multiple performances juggling, firespining, and balancing. After college, his passion for acro expanded, always trying to strive for the next trick. He is always willing to explore new forms of movement and has experience with L-basing, Icarian, and now (mostly) standing acrobatics. He is a nerd at heart, willing to geek out about anime, games (both board and video), and he makes a mean challah bread. He is extremely outgoing, willing to work with anyone, and trying to make anyone and everyone his flier.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, a spot, or just to say hi!

Teacher spotlight 🔦🚨 Meet & !!!

Anya discovered partner acrobatics in Santa Monica at Original Muscle Beach. Despite having zero background in acrobatics or gymnastics, she was instantly drawn to the feeling of flight and the welcoming community. She founded Acro Toronto (www.acrotoronto.com) and has been hosting workshops ever since as well as the annual Toronto AcroCamp. She loves to share her love for Acro, it’s her way of playing, connecting and staying youthful.

Scotty has a passion for fitness and loves to connect with the world and others through movement and play. He invites others to tap into new and infinite possibilities of communication, trust, and connection by combining acrobatics, dance and playful movements in his acro classes. Scotty’s Acro Yoga classes are extremely fun and will make you sweat. Our goal is to have fun and do cool things. It’s not as much of a workout as it is play. One of Scotty’s favorite quotes is, “We don’t stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing.”
