James Church on Main Street in Great Barrington, faced demolition. In 2008, a portion of the rear wall of the historic Gothic Revival stone church had unexpectedly collapsed, forcing the Town Building Inspector to condemn the building and the congregation to temporarily relocate. After a period of discernment the vestry and the congregation decided not to repair or reuse the church and sought a re

al estate appraisal. The findings of the appraisal recommended that, “The highest and best use of the subject property is as a vacant parcel of land that is available for development.”

Concerned that this prominent local landmark would be destroyed, residents Sally and Fred Harris formed a secular, non-profit, Saint James Place, whose mission was to rescue and repurpose the church and adjacent parish hall. SJP reopened as a performing arts and cultural venue in spring 2016. With 17,000 square feet of office, rehearsal, performance and reception spaces, SJP is a dynamic cultural hub in the heart of downtown Great Barrington. SJP is a year-round resource for local artistic and civic organizations, and is proud to be the permanent home of the Peoples Pantry.

Congratulations to the The People's Pantry GB! We've been honored to house and support this vital food access organization and are proud to see them flourish to meet even more need.

"We've shown through our history that we are here for the long run. The new building, quite simply, enables us to do a better job of feeding our neighbors," says People's Pantry Board President Laura Gratz, who points out that the pantry will remain open, even as it transitions to the new space.

Troy Amuso, master conservator, walks audiences through the hidden environmental and human factors that threaten oil paintings over time — from humidity and light exposure to improper cleaning and neglect. Drawing on dramatic real-world case studies, including the recovery of a still life rescued from a house fire, he demonstrates the careful techniques conservators use to stabilize, clean, and restore works while preserving their historical integrity.

The event takes place Friday, October 23, 2026 at 7:00 PM at Saint James Place, 352 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230. All ticket sales will benefit The People’s Pantry and Saint James Place. $25/pp.

Yellow Wallpaper 2.0-2020 is a new take on the classic domestic horror story. It goes like this...

"An overwhelmed adjunct professor, newly a mother, struggles to make sense of their suddenly chaotic reality, her postpartum depression and the mysteries hidden inside their inherited "prewar-6” apartment on the Upper West Side. With humor, social critique and the quivering bones of a horror story, Jennifer Maisel’s wonderful play will sweep you down the rabbit hole with our heroine, T, and bring you face to face with her deep- 2020 dilemmas, passions and choices." — Great Barrington Public Theater

Performances August 20th-September 6th in Great Barrington Public’s newly configured black box theater in the Great Hall at Saint James Place in Great Barrington, MA.
