AVALANCHE ART SPACE presents SARA S. WALLACH : ISLAND – Νησί

“ISLAND – Νησί” is a new series of bittersweet and melancholy photographs the artist made in the Spring of 2021. In this mid-pandemic period the artist traveled to Greece while the country’s EU borders were closed, revisiting Athens and Paros, locations she inhabited a decade earlier with a dramatically contrasting life experience. In this time, “I was simultaneously hollow with loneliness, knocking at the door of memories carrying their own old pain and isolation, but also connected to this place.” This exhibition marks Wallach’s second solo show at Avalanche.

Sara S. Wallach (b.1993) is a fine art photographer. Her works stem from a lifelong interest in the themes of mess, ruin, death, and impermanence. After earning a bachelors degree in photography from Bard College, she lived in Eastern Europe, including Albania and Greece where she studied at the Aegean Center for Fine Arts in Paros, and later in London where she attended graduate courses at Goldsmiths.

AVALANCHE ART SPACE presents CENSORED a collaboration between MISS EXPANDING UNIVERSE and photography duo GUZMAN. The exhibition takes two forms: Guzman’s exploration of Miss Expanding Universe and her muse Uncle Fingers, and a selection of erotic art that has been banned, chastised, and removed from view within daily public life.

Miss Expanding Universe (aka Ashley Yang-Thompson) is a poet, performance artist, painter, prankster, experimenter, and founder of WORM HOUSE: a PURE WEIRD HILARIOUS HEARTBREAKING EGO-DISPENSING graphic-novel-strip-tease-THING. She has won many accolades, but not as many as some of her friends.

Guzman (aka Constance Hansen and Russell Peacock) In the words of Miss Rosen, “You’ve been swimming in Guzman photographs for so long, you might not even know you’re wet... Possessed with the inimitable ability to blur the boundaries of genre, Guzman has been making some of the most innovative, influential, and iconoclastic advertising, fashion, n**e, sports, and celebrity photographs of our age.”

SARA S. WALLACH // BE REAL OR DIE a collection of images made between 2016 – 2020 which represent the artists mastery at transforming the mundane, overlooked, leftover and forgotten objects of the world around us into images that are saturated with a sense of meaning and belonging. The title, Be Real or Die, refers to the artist's photographic practice of making art with reality, but is more pointed to the essence of the artist herself, “If I did not have this form of creative outlet, I would die. At least my soul would.”

Headlining the local Berkshire Edge is a thoughtful article about Borden's exhibit by Hannah Van Sickle. The show 'Jake Borden: Minneapolis' closes this week, and will be open this Thursday July 23 - Sat. July 25th from 6-9pm, and anytime by appointment.

Borden found a delicate balance: He was able to blend in with protesters and gain their trust while showing he was not a threat to those with clubs.
