Not gonna lie, I don't love the finishing process! Swapping out skulls with the beetles is easy, entertaining, exciting. Degreasing takes SO MUCH PATIENCE! 😭 *Eventually* I'll have a pretty decent inventory list to unload though.. 🤪

The hardest part is just being patient. 😅

The bucket contains an assortment of skulls I had laying around from my previous colony. They're soaking in dawn soap and water, with an aquarium heater on the highest setting.

In the cooler I have most of the racoon bones in separate jars, heated with an extra reptile mat to keep the soapy water above room temperature.

This process can take weeks, to months even, to remove all the grease trapped inside the bones. The soapy water gets changed once a week and everything gets a good scrub in between changes.

When a skull is 99% clean, I set it aside with a damp towel to keep it from drying out. That’s when the babies step in—these tiny pros are essential for reaching every nook and cranny, ensuring no detail is left behind.

Meanwhile, the colony doesn’t stop! I just dropped in a brand-new skull, fresh from the freezer, for the rest of the crew to get started on. The process never slows down around here! 🖤

✨ Exciting Update! ✨

The first skull will be ready to pull out tomorrow! 😁

Starting a new colony is always a slow burn, especially when it’s a smaller order (200-300) and requires shipping. But progress is happening! It takes 1,000+ to efficiently tackle larger projects like deer skulls, so this week-long squirrel clean-up is right on track.

The best part? The colony is thriving with lots of new little ones already! 🖤 Soon, they'll be unstoppable speed-cleaning machines. Stay tuned for more skull transformations! 🦴

My boyfriend puts up with a lot! I mean, I knew he was the one when, early on, he opened my fridge full of thawing heads and... other parts (for the beetles, of course) without batting an eye. 🥰 But today, we found his limit. Apparently, bringing my cooler of smelly bones into the house for a wash was a bridge too far. Can you believe he asked me to light a candle!? For real though, he's the best! ❤😘
