What is Voice Therapy?
In short, it’s like physical therapy but for your voice. Addresses voice disorders, but also voice weakness, fatigue, strength, endurance, general health and hygiene, injury prevention, injury recovery.
Who should get Voice Therapy?
In short, anyone who has a difficulty with voice output (how it sounds) and/or voice function (how it’s working)
Is Voice Therapy covered by my insurance?
Most insurances cover voice therapy if recommended by a doctor or speech-pathologist. Check with your insurance provider.
Does Voice Therapy address my singing technique?
No…and yes. Voice therapists are not typically not trained in singing voice instruction (but THIS one is! 🙂 ) but many of the concepts addressed in voice therapy will be applicable to your singing voice technique. If you are a singer experiencing voice issues, voice therapy is excellent for providing education, instruction, and may be able to identify behaviors having a negative impact on singing voice technique.
How do I get a referral for Voice Therapy?
A visit to an ENT is always a good first step. Let them know about your voice concerns and your interest in seeking voice therapy to address them. They’ll likely do some kind of visual exam and will be able to provide further guidance from there. Also - don’t forget to tell them you want to go to Mary Free Bed to see me! 🙂
