Every touring band eventually runs into the same logistical problem, which is that one of the people who is supposed to be on stage cannot get to the venue. Visas fall through, injuries happen, family situations arrive with no notice, and the industry has a well established answer, which involves finding a musician good enough to absorb an entire set in a few days and dropping them into the gap.
Gojira are a French metal band with a technically demanding catalogue, which narrows the pool of people who can plausibly step in, and when their drummer Mario was unable to travel with them for a run of dates in the United States this year, the band had to work through exactly that process.
The drummer they brought in was called Luigi, and nobody appears to have selected him for that reason, nobody involved in the booking flagged it, and the pairing seems to have gone unremarked inside the organization until somebody outside it noticed and said so publicly.
Coincidences of that shape usually turn out to be manufactured, which is why the first instinct on hearing it is to assume a publicist somewhere has been earning their money, and this one holds up anyway. Two drummers who did not choose their own names ended up in sequence on the same tour through an entirely ordinary scheduling problem.
The dates went ahead, the substitution worked, and the whole thing would have been forgotten in a week if the two men involved had happened to be called anything else.
