DOWN THE ROAD FINAL CAST ANNOUNCEMENT

Meet Kate Beagle, playing Iris Hennimen. Kate has been acting with Get Uncomfortable for a few years and is ready step into her first lead role! Here’s what she had to say about the show:

I am beyond thrilled to portray Iris Henniman in this production of “Down the Road” by Lee Blessing.

As I got to know this true crime journalist who is being drawn into the orbit of a notorious killer, I found both Iris and myself wrestling with the weight of morbid curiosity, the stories we choose to tell as a result, and what those stories cost us as a collective.

There is something undeniably compelling about violence that exists just beyond our own lives. There is an urge that pulls us closer, asks us to look a little longer than we know we should, promises safety on the other side of such awareness. This play doesn’t shy away from that instinct, but instead turns it back on us, asking not just why we look, but what it truly means to bear witness.

I am so excited to explore these questions alongside our audience. At the core of this story is an uncomfortable truth: we are, at times, drawn to darkness. What that says about us - as people, as parents, as partners - is complex, unsettling, and deeply human.

Stepping into this role as Iris has felt a bit like holding up a mirror I wasn’t entirely prepared to face, and realizing just how difficult it can be to look away.

Don’t miss DOWN THE ROAD by Lee Blessing. We open in TWO DAYS! Showings April 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7 pm at Grand Junction Koinonia (730 25 Road). Rated R for graphic descriptions of sexual violence.

DOWN THE ROAD CAST PT 2

Zach VanHouten will be playing journalist Dan Henniman. We asked Zach about how he felt about the production, and he said this:

I have only been back into theater for a couple of years now. and in those years I have grown as an actor. When I returned to the valley, I started with what I was most comfortable with, Shakespeare. I got to be dramatic, bombastic, and theatrical. But then I got to play my first contemporary role with Buddy, in Get Uncomfortable’s “ Kimberly Akimbo” and during that production I started to understand how far I have to grow, and how far I had already grown. And now, almost a year later, I get to have that same epiphany as I bring to life the most difficult role of my career yet!

I knew this would be a hard show, I knew it would be an uncomfortable show, But I underestimated many things when we first started this show. I underestimated the subtlety and difficulty of portraying Dan Henniman, I underestimated the pressure and stamina requirements of being in a three person show, I underestimated the text, and its nuance and the attention to detail it would demand, and most of all, I underestimated myself and the performance I would end up giving. a performance I can’t wait to share with you, one I never would have thought possible of myself!

Don’t miss DOWN THE ROAD by Lee Blessing, directed by Keira Rose! April 17, 18, 24, 25 @ 7pm at 730 25 Road!

DOWN THE ROAD CAST ANNOUNCEMENT

Meet Shea Hardy, who has tackled the extremely challenging role of serial killer William Reach with skill and grace. But don’t take it from me, take it from them:

“The role of William Reach is certainly the biggest acting challenge I’ve ever undertaken. The concept of playing any storybook villain has a certain charm - an allure, almost. Upon my first time reading the script, I quickly came to the realization that Reach is not that storybook villain. He’s a terrifyingly real evil- unapologetic and completely irredeemable. He represents a mentality that’s just as dangerous and pertinent today as it was when this play was written.

The text itself, while upsetting, is brilliantly crafted. Lee Blessing put so much intention into every line of dialogue in this show. To thrill, yes, but also to shed light on uncomfortable social norms. And I truly am honored to portray them.

I am fortunate enough to be given the space to portray these atrocities surrounded by people that I love. Direction, production, crew, and cast alike, I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without all of them, along with the support of my loving boyfriend at home.

I hope you see that energy in this play. Through all the drama, anguish, and conflict you’ll see on stage, this was a labor of love.”

Come see Shea delight and terrify you APRIL 17, 18, 24, and 25! 7 pm at Grand Junction Koinonia, 730 25 Road. Get tickets here: https://cur8.com/25660/project/136938
