Our own Maggie Banstra, maker of the Feast dinner plates, is also competing for a lease on a new car! She was selected by West Michigan Honda to paint a car for ArtPrize. View her amazing Grand Rapids themed car in Rosa Parks circle this week and follow the link here to vote!

I am so excited to be part of this special collaboration for Art Prize 2015!

Bluring the lines between fine art and craft, Feast-7 Hungry Artists is a multi layered, conceptual entry that is created with well crafted, functional and decorative objects for the home. Each part of this installation is original in concept and design, and the pieces are individually hand crafted using age old techniques.

My part of this meaningful and decorative installation is the sterling flatware. There are 24 pieces total, which include 8, three piece place settings (knife fork and spoon). I've used 4 different stone inlays and 4 different designs for the place settings so each place setting is different. I've created these pieces using goldsmithing and silversmithing techniques. Each one begins with silver sheet and wire that is forged, cut, filed, formed, soldered, sanded and polished. The stone inlays are natural gemstones inherited from my father's collection found on his travels across the US. I have designed the pieces using aesthetics found in the work of designers Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright and in the Danish modern and mission styles.

If you look at the individual parts of our installation you will notice how certain elements travel from one artists' work to the next, creating a balanced and harmonious environment. While you are here, consider the meaning of the table; sharing meals, festivities, serious meetings, celebrations and feasts, and while you are at ArtPrize fill yourself with whatever your spirit is craving...

Bon Appetit!

A Fish Scale Vase, similar to the piece I did for Feast!, goes into the reheating furnace yet another time. The creation of a vase requires several reheats, as well as blowing, and shaping.with a number of tools.

I am so thrilled to be working with this talented group of artists/designers on the Feast-7 Hungry Artists project for ArtPrize 2015. My part of this collaborative project will be the flatware, 8 sterling place settings.. I will start with three piece settings (knife, fork and spoon) but may add a fourth piece (salad fork) as time and $ allows. I was toying with the idea of making 8, slightly different place settings but may do 4 sets of two.

I love work influenced by Danish modern, the Arts and Craft movement and Frank Lloyd Wright, and was happy the group was leaning in that direction with this project. Everyone is working to create a cohesive installation with independent but relatable features. It isn't really ironic that we were discussing our "Feast" project over dinner last week. It fits right in with the many meanings of the word feast and the conversation of this project. I am sure my fellow artists and I will meet again, maybe a few times, over dinner this summer.

I will post my process photos in this album and write captions to add details of the progress. Please "like" the album if you want to follow the evolution of the flatware for this exciting collaborative project!

Bon Appétit!
