This piece is called "Matthew 25:45" and when I started it I was so angry. Then over the weeks it took to finish that anger just turned into sadness.
I am not really a religious person. Honestly, maybe there is something greater than us out there. Who am I to deny that? Maybe there is some creator watching our lives unfold... But if he is there, then in my opinion, he's an absentee father at best, and I think he has a lot to answer for.
But regardless of my feelings about God, I can't help but think of Jesus during times like these. Because, whether he was a divine being or just a man, there is no denying where Jesus of Nazareth would have stood when humanity and compassion were once again on the line. And I can't help but wonder, would some of his followers even recognize him today or would they be too blind in their "faith" to see him standing there among the broken and afraid?
*Painter's note: Jesus of Nazareth was a Middle Eastern man, and as such was likely to have brown or olive skin and darker features. His complexion being fair in this piece is an intentional choice due to the common ideals of the crowd standing among him, further emphasizing the lack of recognition.
