Grand Forks is about to lose a majority of their community competitive pools. In the recent past there were six lanes at the Red River High School, that pool has now been shut down and filled in. Last fall Central High School drained its pool due to HVAC issues and closed their six lane pool indefinitely. UND has a plan to shut down the Hyslop pool which has eight - 50 meter lanes or sixteen - 25
yd lanes. Once the Hyslop pool at UND is shut down there will only be a five lane pool remaining at the YMCA and the three lane pool at Choice Health and Fitness. We all know how critical pool access is to the health and well being of our community. Families with young children know how tough it is to access swim lessons for their children. The current pool at UND is currently a key provider of swim lessons in Grand Forks. The Hyslop pool not only is a key provider of swim lessons in the community, it also is home to rescue training for local Sheriff and Police departments. It houses numerous organizations such as Masters Swimming, the RRV Wahoo swim club, Boys and Girls High School swim for Red River and Central, UND club swimming, and open swim for many others. Once this pool closes all of these organizations will have minimal or no access to facilities. The UND pool has long term issues and without a College swim team it is understandable that UND cannot continue to operate this facility. We believe that a new Grand Forks Park District facility that houses both a Lane Pool and a Turf Facility is imperative for community growth and well being.
