This week I'm experimenting with some wild clay and wood ash glazes. It's been really satisfying to process these two materials from my yard.
The little cup is made out of 30% wild clay but I'm hoping to adjust it to be at least 50% wild clay. On it's own the red wild clay is very short and cracks far too easily. My last batch I water processed differently to have less silt contaminating it and I'm hoping it has a bit more plasticity. The last batch became FAR more plastic by aging 6+ months.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of participating in a rocket kiln workshop led by ceramic artist Lisa Orr. I've been following the rocket kiln project for a little over a year now, and it was invaluable to get hands on experience and see it built and fired in person.
This workshop was hosted by Don Reed of Crab Orchard Pottery, a beautiful studio nestled in the mountains of eastern Tennessee.
I had a blast, and there's nothing like getting to shoot the s**t and share meals with a bunch of potters!
This workshop revived me creatively and spiritually and I'm so grateful I got to attend. What's most exciting about the rocket kiln is the open source nature of sharing alterations or techniques with a larger community as well as the accessibility to high fire in different atmospheres at a fraction of the cost using a scrap kiln body. Also this design is extremely efficient, running on the equivalent of about three wood pallets and produces almost no smoke.
