🧁 It’s Cupcake Day in Art 1! 🧁

We have started talking about the element of value. Last week we practiced rendering value using shading techniques with graphite and charcoal. Today we took reference photos for our next project- cupcakes, obviously! We’ll draw these using charcoal on black paper. The results are usually…. delicious!

Our first project was a collaboration between the whole department.

Each art student received three popsicle sticks to decorate any way they wanted, but they had to include their first and last name and grade level. This collaborative work will proudly hang in the hall all year! …. Or until the weight of 700 ish popsicle sticks vs staples and push pins makes it fall off the wall. 😆 But hopefully all year!

It’s been a wonderful week back at work - GPEF grant iPads and lightboxes were distributed last Thursday during GISD Inspires to district art teachers, so all K-12 students will be able to keep digital Artsonia portfolios that stay with them through graduation. 🫶🏼 Thank you Graham Public Education Foundation!

We had Fish Camp 🐟 and Meet the Teacher 🍎 tonight before heading over to Booster Bash. Everything has been well-organized, and I can tell that many students are ready and excited for Wednesday morning!

National Art Honor Society will be leading a free mum make-and-take class this September for any HS students who want to make a homecoming mum... but we could use some help gathering supplies! You can drop the bagged or boxed supplies in the front HS office once school starts, or email me at [email protected] to arrange a pickup.

We could use:
- old mums we can recycle for supplies
- hot glue sticks and guns
- E6000 glue
- staplers and staples
- flat-backed pins
- pipe cleaners
- artificial flowers
- ribbon
- gems and jewels
- beaded garland
- alphabet stickers
- whatever else you think is cool on a mum

⭐️Seniors 2026⭐️

We habitually think we have more time left and end up making/signing the senior canvas in a panic, and this year was no exception.

This canvas trekked all over the school but I still missed photos of a few students - the last few weeks are pure scheduling chaos. Seniors are out taking AP exams, on field trips, turning in laptops, tying up loose ends…. But never, ever skipping 😉

This crew features a few new and lots of familiar faces - repeat offenders sticking around for Art 2, 3, and 4. Some of these kids I’ve known since they were 10 years old. I am going to miss their unique blend of nonchalance, leadership, humor, and tenacity. They made their last year together very special and it was so fun to watch leaders emerge and a community created.

Next up…. Graduation!

There’s a new tradition in the Art Department. At the end of each school year, one outstanding student will be awarded the GHS Golden Brush - this award recognizes someone who has worked hard all year to grow their artistic skills and who has embraced challenges while showing a willingness to explore new ideas with curiosity and enthusiasm.

I can think of no better recipient of the inaugural GHS Golden Brush award than Emma Clark. Emma is an Art 4 student who exemplifies these qualities. She has shown perseverance in her relentless four-year pursuit of VASE greatness, medaling each year at Regionals; she cheers for her peers when the experience success, and she has been a dependable officer for NAHS. Emma will be attending UNT in the fall to study fashion design.

Emma’s Golden Brush will be installed in the art room, where her legacy won’t be forgotten! Thank you Emma, and good luck in your future endeavors! 💛🏆🖌️

Today around two dozen NAHS members were treated to an excursion- a reward for achieving service hour and club activity attendance goals. There are hundreds of service hours represented by these students!

We celebrated with a local field trip, and this might be my new favorite thing. Graham has so much to offer!

Thank you to these members and especially to our officers, who truly poured into NAHS this year and made it something extra special. You all deserved this bleat - I mean treat. 🎨🐑🍿

Extra props to local treasures Doodle Barn, Potter’s Pizza, and The National Theatre for making this day scrumptious and entertaining.
