The Alamance Wellness Collaborative brings together leaders from public health, planning, education, business, recreation and parks, and nonprofit organizations to advance active living and healthy eating throughout Alamance County. Through a collaborative, countywide approach, the group works to expand access to physical activity opportunities, nutritious foods, supportive policies, and healthy environments that improve overall community well-being.

At today’s Alamance Wellness Collaborative meeting, themed “Shaping Policy for an Inclusive & Healthier Alamance,” our Recreation & Parks Director, Brian Faucette, presented on the department’s playUNITED Inclusion Policy, sharing its purpose, development process, and guidance for other organizations interested in creating more inclusive practices.

The vision of the Graham Recreation & Parks Department (GRPD) is to “strengthen our community by connecting people, parks, and programs.” To support this vision, GRPD staff and the Graham Recreation Commission developed playUNITED, an inclusion policy adopted by the Graham City Council in 2021. The policy serves as a framework for creating inclusive parks, facilities, programs, and practices that ensure all individuals can experience the benefits of quality parks and recreation opportunities.

Key elements of playUNITED include staff training, baseline standards for inclusive features in new and renovated facilities, guidelines for reasonable program accommodations, and ongoing evaluation and reporting informed by community feedback.
