* The show is around 45 minutes long

* In case of rain, a version of the show will be performed in the Dirt Floor Cathedral

Scenes from Jephte, then and now.

Reviving a show that hasn’t been performed for over 50 years has been a process! We had no film record, so we recreated the show through old photos and people’s memories. The idea to put Jephte on started with an email from Margo Sherman, who played Jephte in the original show. She had collected some photos and people’s memories. From there, we set to work recreating the show scene by scene, going off of the music, the text of the music, and the photos. We hunted through old boxes of photo archives. We noted which puppets appeared together, and put together an order. We read Stephan Brecht’s “Bread and Puppet Theater” book, which has a good but short description of Jephte. We called old friends up who saw or were in the show in 1974, trying to jog their memories. Over and over again we heard what a spectacular and moving performance it was. We know we can’t recreate the exact piece. It’s not 1974, the moment is so different, the landscape is different, and Bread and Puppet is different. But its been a really exciting process. And, we are almost there! Come and see it, Thursday Sept 17 and Friday September 18th at 5:30 in the field at Bread and Puppet. Bring your own chair if you have one ( we will have limited seats). Looks like it won’t rain! The show is short, around 45 minutes. Tickets available on our website.
