Lili Boulanger’s (1893 - 1918) D’un Matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning) was composed during the last months of her life, along with the somber D’un Soir triste (Of a Sad Evening). A comparison of the two reveals Boulanger's ability to capture different moods and feelings.

At only 24 years of age, Lili was well known as the first woman to win the Prix de Rome and for her impressionistic compositions.

D'un Matin de Printemps is considered a perfect example of impressionist music in which Lili captures the colors of spring with parts full of shadows and parts glittering with light.

In the Spring of 1917, Lili lay stricken with terminal illness. Her sister Nadia was by her side helping her write her compositions while the First World War and German bombardment was raging. Lili's final works demonstrate her amazingly mature voice. D’un Matin de Printemps was finished only two months before her death and is one of many compositions written during her final months.

The number and variety of pieces she worked on during this time is amazing. Her scores were written with faint and unclear handwriting and she dictated her final piece Pie Jesu to Nadia, who kept vigil at her bedside. Lili died on March 15, 1918.

Nadia would go on to have a long and acclaimed career, and would always remain her sister’s greatest champion. She often programed Lili's compositions in programs which she conducted and performed. When Nadia conducted the Boston Symphony in 1962, she programmed three of Lili’s Psalm settings for chorus and orchestra.
