I’m very interested in making works that can act as a friend or a guide. After I made this large mixed media piece, I immediately thought of Mary Oliver‘s poem “Aunt Leaf“

Aunt Leaf
Needing one, I invented her – – –
the great-great-aunt dark as hickory
called Shining-Leaf, or Drifting-Cloud
or The-Beauty-of-the-Night.

Dear aunt, I’d call into the leaves,
and she’d rise up, like an old log in a pool,
and whisper in a language only the two of us knew
the word that meant follow,

and we’d travel
cheerful as birds
out of the dusty town and into the trees
where she would change us both into something quicker – – –
two foxes with black feet,
two snakes green as ribbons,
two shimmering fish – – – and all day we’d travel.

At day’s end she’d leave me back at my own door
with the rest of my family,
who were kind, but solid as wood
and rarely wandered. While she,
old twist of feathers and birch bark,
would walk in circles wide as rain and then
float back

scattering the rags of twilight
on fluttering moth wings;

or she’d slouch from the barn like a gray opossum;

or she’d hang in the milky moonlight
burning like a medallion,

this bone dream, this friend I had to have,
this old woman made out of leaves.

Please join us!! If you have never been to our fabulous street party, we would love to see you and share smiles, laughter, art, barbecue, drinks, live music, and lots of dancing (Deb’s favorite part - she even made some wearable art for dancing). All are welcome - bring your friends, family, children, and pets! Gallery RAG is dedicated to supporting our whole community, not just the arts. As usual, Rick will be running his popular barbecue stand and drumming up bidders for our amazing selection of silent auction items. There will be a tent for shade or rainy weather and inside the gallery there will be an exhibition of Deb’s work made during her sailing travels in the Caribbean and Gloucester MA (the wearable art will be for sale too). Proceeds of the silent auction and all art sales will go to support Gallery RAG’s artist residency program, the Art+Everywhere Foundation, and will help keep the arts alive on Rocky Neck!

There is plenty to see and do in Gloucester - make a weekend of it! How does my work sit in relationship to the history of plein air and contemporary art on rocky neck? This piece was made during my Goetteman Artist residency this past November 2025 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, at the Rocky neck art colony. The underpinning of the work was made outside, and in this case, created at 10 pound island using ink, seaweed rocks and seawater. My husband, Rick Miles, droped me off on his way to our sailboat, Artemis , and I spent the day out in Gloucester Harbour making art with the ocean, waves, sand and vegetation. Lastly, I bring the work back to the studio and collage on other pieces that I have made during the same day. It is abstract, and also partly Zen practice, and plein air all combined into one!

A visit with Kerri on Block Island.
After sailing from the Chesapeak Bay I got to finally see my youngest daughter in her new environment! So magical. ❤️⛵️mixed media on rice paper 9x11.
