It’s been such a rewarding week, but now we’re all ready to go home and rest. Thank you to our teachers from this week-Karen Fleming from The Ballet Theatre of Maryland and Laura Lloyd, Patrizia Melega-Jones, and Rachel Bell Carpenter from Theatre CNU and Christopher Newport University.

Dancing is more than just technique. Dancers have worked this summer in Elemental Body Alignment System (EBAS), a system that focuses on strength, mobility, and alignment and helps dancers access their bodies in a healthy and safe way.

Our dancers had an awesome time learning “Fearless” from the broadway show “Mean Girls” this week. @

We might have ballet in our name but our dancers train in multiple styles. Company members have been working hard learning the Horton technique of modern dance.

It is our honor to present the 2026 Bayside Youth Ballet Memorial Scholarship to Evie Newsome!

The purpose of this scholarship is to support the continuing education of BYB members pursuing studies related to dance, the performing arts, and the liberal arts. Established by the Ramsey family and supported by the South family, this annual scholarship reflects the enduring commitment of BYB parents and board members to the future of young artists.

This scholarship honors the memory of Heidi Jo South, a devoted BYB dancer from 1995 until her graduation in 2002. Heidi went on to earn a degree in Psychology before her passing in 2008. It also recognizes the lasting contributions of Jahn and Jerry Ramsey. Jahn was a charter member and past president of Bayside Youth Ballet whose leadership and dedication helped build the foundation of the organization, while her husband Jerry generously supported the company through countless productions and projects.

This year’s recipient Evelyn “Evie” Newsome, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Gloucester High School this June of 2026 with an impressive 4.25 GPA. With her first dance class at 3 years old, she has trained at Diggs School of Dance for 12 years and has been a member of the Company for 9 of those years, participating in 34 different community performances and 6 solos. She has gained experience while demonstrating exceptional dedication, and commitment leading to advancement in her artistry.

This fall, Evie will attend Radford University, where she plans to double major in Psychology and Dance while also pursuing a minor in Studio Art. Her academic achievements, artistic excellence, and passion for learning embody the spirit and purpose of this scholarship.
