Last but not least for our Senior Spotlight series, Jaylen Severino. Or as we call him, “Sev”. Before I get into anything personal, I just want to say one thing about Sev; he’s fun as hell. Nobody keeps the mood lighter, while also working really hard, than this kid. I’ve really started to realize how valuable that is this year. He sort of acts as our center and keeps us grounded when things start to get too serious, and he’s very good at it. Practicing three hours a day, for months on end, can sometimes seem like a drag. But not with Sev around.
As far as my relationship with Sev, it goes all the way back to freshmen English class. Of course, he played as an 8th grader on our freshmen team, but I didn’t know him that well. When he came into my class, I didn’t know what to expect, but what I got was one of the most respectful and kind student athletes I’d ever had. He took school seriously and treated the kids around him like they were no different than him. I knew Sev was going to be a big part of our program for years to come.
A two year captain, there is no physical feat that Jaylen can’t accomplish on a baseball field. The five tools are clear and obvious, and when he displays them, he’s a real weapon for the team. Not many guys can hit a regular ground ball and beat it out with super speed and also hit a ball 380 feet. And to his credit, he’s also played his best defensive center field this year.
Sev is going to Salve Regina to play football, and may try out for baseball, as well. Regardless, the people that get to be around Sev the next four years are going to have fun. Thanks for everything, J, and let’s finish with some fireworks.
