While our orchestra may be "on break," that doesn't mean our members are slowing down at all. We so dearly hope that you come see 🦗 Crickets on a Hill ✨ next week, put on by The Court House Players Community Theatre. Many of our musicians are performing in the pit orchestra!

This show - both the music and the play - was written by locals about a 1776 revolutionary battle that took place in Mathews County. This is an amazing way to celebrate 250 years of American Independence, and contemplate how folks who lived right here made an impact on those brand-new United States.

Today, as we enjoy a bit of a summer break, we want to celebrate the winner of our first annual scholarship: Sophia Salisbury! 🎓

We're so proud to have performed with Sophia. She will be studying music education at ODU this fall, and she appreciates the opportunity to learn a new instrument and grow in her musicianship and confidence. We can't wait to see the impact she'll have on young minds.

To all of our folks who donate to the orchestra - thank you for helping us to financially encourage student musicians, like her!

We're completely nonprofit, and we take seriously the charge of allocating donations. We use money to buy music to perform, to get percussion equipment, to support student musicians, and to generally further our mission of bringing free performances to the Gloucester/Mathews area.

In preparation for Mathews County’s upcoming grand July 4th celebration, the Mathews VA250 Committee invites residents, neighbors, and guests to a celebratory concert on Friday, May 15, at Mathews High School.

Co-sponsored by the Mathews Museum, Mathews Historical Society, Sons of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the American Revolution, this event commemorates the 250th anniversary of Virginia’s declaration of independence—one of the first three colonies to do so. The Courthouse Community Orchestra, directed by Staff Sergeant Jarrett Kocan of the U.S. Air Force, will perform a program of “Music of America" at 7:00 p.m. (Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.)

Admission is free. Join in an evening of music and history as we celebrate Virginia’s role in America’s fight for independence!

Thank you for coming out to our micro-concert at Rosewell! If you'd like to hear more great music, we hope to see you at one of our upcoming full orchestra concerts on May 9, 15, and 27.

Full orchestra concert for April 25, 4 p.m. has been canceled due to the rain forecast. String quartet will be playing instead.

04/23/2026

The Courthouse Community Orchestra will perform its first free concert of the 2026 season at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Rosewell Plantation, 5113 Old Rosewell Lane, Gloucester.

From the comedically cheerful “Yankee Doodle” by Morton Gould to the rousing “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, the 43-member, all-volunteer orchestra has a spring concert program sure to stir the patriot in everyone.

But the program goes beyond the patriotic to feature some toe-tapping modern-day favorites, as well, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badelt and “Star Wars Epic Part I & II” by John Williams.

Conducted by U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Jarrett Kocan, the orchestra will perform the same concert, free of charge, at three additional venues, as well. They are:

On Saturday, May 9, at 2 p.m. at the CNU Community Music Festival at Christopher Newport University, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Newport News;

On Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at Mathews High School, as part of the Mathews VA250 Celebration; and,

On Wednesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. at the Fine Arts Museum of Gloucester, 6894 Main Street, Gloucester.

Our first concert of the season is this weekend! Saturday, April 25, 4:00 p.m. at Rosewell. See you there!
