We just added this to the floor last week. Come on down and play.
On this day in pinball history May 21st, 2003, Stern Pinball Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was first spotted in test location.
Timed alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to the big screen as the T-850, this machine put players right in the fight against the relentless T-X. Just like in the film, you start outgunned and outmatched, working your way across the playfield to collect weapons and build up your arsenal before the final showdown. Survive long enough and you get to fire the backglass RPG cannon straight at the T-X herself.
The team behind it was nothing short of legendary. Designer Steve Ritchie, art by Kevin O'Connor, dots and animation by Mark Galvez, mechanics by John Rotharmel and Ray Tanzer, and music and sound by Chris Granner, with software by Dwight Sullivan. Stern specifically touted the return of the Terminator 2: Judgment Day team, with Granner on sound and Sullivan on software. Steve Ritchie had been out of pinball for seven years when he came back to lead this project, and the wait was worth every second.
The playfield delivers on every front. Three all-steel ramps, a backbox reciprocating cannon that fires a Delrin ball horizontally at five targets, and a full-playfield Red Alert mode that lights everything up crimson make this one of the most visually intense machines of its era. Arnold Schwarzenegger contributed original voice clips, giving the whole experience an authenticity that fans of the franchise absolutely felt. A kickback and ball-save feature keeps even newer players in the fight, while a lane-changing mechanic opens up more strategic possibilities for veterans.
The T-800 told us he'd be back. Steve Ritchie proved it.
Do you own a T3? Have you played one? What do you think of it?
