Today is National Comic Book Day. It’s the perfect day to celebrate the art, stories, characters and what not in comics. A lot of people think comic sales have increased because the movies are so popular but they really haven’t. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t love them.

Every caricature and Cartoon Portrait I do gives homage to comic books in one way or another.

This Spider-Man page is one I painted back in my Marvel days.

*I should preface this by saying I’m talking about doing art as a career path. If you’re a hobbist (and ain’t nothing wrong with that), you should probably ignore everything underneath this sentence.

When artists think of jumping out on their own to become a full-time self employed pro, most whimper away from the idea because of the risks. There are risks of course in clawing your way to your dream but there’s risks in not doing it too.

I’d argue there’s risk to staying at a job you can’t stand (I can vouch for that one), risk in your employer crumbling, risk to your health, risk in watching opportunities gallup away, risk in not building your confidence and self-reliance. There’s risk to everything.

The question to ask yourself is do you want to take on the risk of doing your art, or the risk the comes with not doing it?

Sometimes I get asked about books that help learn caricature. There are lots of them out there but this book by Tom Richmond is the most complete. I took a workshop with Richmond a few years ago and I learned even more.

So if you know anyone with any interest in learning how to draw caricatures, here is a good place to start.

I saw this documentary a few days ago and it made me realize I didn’t know as much about George Lucas as I thought I did. It was really fun and inspirational seeing how the movies (and his movie companies) came to be.

Do you see the old woman or the young woman in this picture?

You know what that means right? It means two people can look at the exact same thing and have two totally different opinions.

Politics is kinda heated right now… Your friends or family may think different than you. Perception is everything. Don’t be afraid to cut them some slack. It’s probably healthier for you too.

Better to practice a little empathy than hissing like an angry goose every time you open Facebook.
