I’ve been a little quiet about this, but back in September, there were a lot of things on my mind. I started the Glendale Youth Symphony around 2018 as the Youth Christian Orchestra.
We grew but has more students came, more students were not Christian so we dropped the name and became the Glendale Youth Symphony.
Maddie Gail designed our logo to be colorful. I remember asking her to make the logo, colorful, vibrant, unique.
I started the orchestra because I looked around Los Angeles County and youth Orchestra didn’t have any black or brown kids in them. As a French hornist growing up, I never saw kids who looked like me in the orchestra.
So I set out to recruit students from schools to join the Orchestra kids of color and who had potential to be great musicians. Of course it wasn’t limited to them, but I made a special point to find talented youth because orchestra was still auditioned.
Some kids didn’t have instruments so I bought the instruments out of my money on Facebook marketplace. The first couple of years we started the Orchestra out of my pocket.
Out of many memorable experiences, I focused my attention on building character in the kids, reminding them that humor is part of music making. That we celebrate as a group each other. That some amazing memories are the result of consistent and focused work.
I’ve decided to step down as the executive director and artistic director of the GYS. I’ll be dedicating more time as a writer and the composer in the next year. And most of all, to my lovely wife, Jessica:)
I want to sincerely celebrate and welcome Dr. Nové Deypalan as our new artistic director of the GYS. He is a fabulous conductor and sincere friend of the organization. I look forward to the music he will be making with the kids!
Welcome, Dr. Deypalan!
