My Story - Founder - Nimat Bilal
As a professional stylist with a natural hair salon, I was constantly looking for products to use on my kinky and coily hair textured clientele. 70% of them had excessively dry hair. Since we had never learned about or discussed kinky and coily hair in cosmetology school, the scenario begged the question, “Why do so many African American women have dry and hard t
o manage hair?” I observed as the market advertised natural hair products claiming to moisturize all hair types while my experience as a kinky and coily hair specialist proved this to be untrue. Many clients thought that they just didn’t know how to use these new products and blamed themselves. They didn’t realize that their specific hair type was dry prone and needed much more moisture than other hair types. I soon discovered that the common denominator for many of the hair conditions I would see day to day was simply lack of moisture. I was fortunate enough to be a part of distributing a hair line that one of my sisters had developed as a result of becoming a naturopath in her fight to beat the HIV virus. There was no cure at that time so many naturopaths were born out of that era. Her oil line had done so well that another of my sisters carried it on after she passed. Ten years later (2007) I incorporated her base oils with a few essential oils of my own to create the Fabulocs thirteen essential oil blend. This blend is not only our signature oil and the secret sauce of our Dry Scalp Treatment, it is the foundation of many of our other products as well. My next move was to accompany the Dry Scalp Oil with the ultimate moisturizer and styler that would satisfy difficult to moisturize hair. After purchasing bathtub loads of shea butter and olive oil and burning out countless food processors, I would produce our best seller and the heart of the Fabulocs hair care line, The Fabulocs Intense Moisture Therapy. This shea-based moisturizer incorporates light and heavy oil combinations to penetrate and seal moisture into the hair shaft. This was a turning point in my career as it was the first time that I had observed significant transformations in my client’s hair conditions. I noticed how well our Intense Moisture Therapy worked on our regulars but found that customers who took care of their own hair at home would experience recovery and then a decline in moisture. This was due to the use of standard shampoo brands found on the shelves at beauty supply and convenience stores. Though great for other hair types, they were damaging to kinky and coily dry prone hair. The invent of co-washes was simply a God send however many of them were still too light to satisfy dry prone kinky and coily hair. By combining heavier oils with just the right amount of clarifier I was able to create a hair softening shampoo and conditioner substitute called The Fabulocs Cleansing Conditioning Crème. I would later go on to create a moisture heavy yet no build up styler for locs, cornrows, finger coils and flat twist’s known as The Fabulocs Styling Paste (formerly The Fabulocs Loc Binding Butter) to support the under-served loc maintenance product industry and The Fabulocs Curl Custard for softening and defining super dry hair. The combination of these superior dry hair products quickly catapulted Fabulocs from a natural hair salon chain to a well know hair care center with a super baad product line!
