106 Years Ago Today: The 19th Amendment
On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, prohibiting the denial of voting rights on the basis of s*x, a landmark achievement, though for many women of color, meaningful access to the ballot would remain a fight.
Here in Glen Ridge, women had already begun making their voices heard.
In 1912, eight years before the 19th Amendment Glen Ridge elected a woman to its Board of Education. The story behind that election is a particularly interesting chapter in Glen Ridge history and one you can hear on the Women’s Club Audio Tour (link below)
The Women’s Club of Glen Ridge, founded in 1905, was part of an era when women were finding new ways to participate in civic life, advocate for their communities, and lead.
Today we celebrate the women who fought for the vote, those who stepped forward to lead, and those who continued the fight to make that right a reality for all women.
